Ohio State Defeats Minnesota State, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team downed Minnesota State, 3-1, Friday in a WCHA match-up at the OSU Ice Rink. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 12-9-4, 9-9-1-1 (WCHA), while the Mavericks fall to 7-18-0, 3-16-0 (WCHA).
Despite Ohio State leading shots on goal 11-6, both the Buckeyes and the Mavericks skated to a scoreless first period.
Posting 18 shots on goal to the Mavericks’ nine, Ohio State’s attack on the net produced two goals in the second period. At 14:18, junior Tina Hollowell notched her third of the goal of the season with the help of seniors Kelly Wild and Melissa Feste. Minutes later at the 18:38 mark, sophomore Ally Tarr found the net assisted by junior Paige Semenza and senior Natalie Spooner. Her 146th career point, Spooner’s assist moved her into a tie her for third in the all-time career points category.
Minnesota State answered at 8:55 in the third stanza when sophomore Tracy McCann scored from junior Erika Magnusson during a scramble in front of the Ohio State net. In the final minutes of the period at 18:37, senior Laura McIntosh brought the Buckeye lead to two with a goal assisted by junior Hokey Langan.
Between the pipes, sophomore Buckeye Lisa Steffes made 26 saves to sophomore Danielle Butters’ 33 for MSU. In the faceoff circle, the Buckeyes held a 28-24 advantage.
The Buckeyes and Mavericks meet again tomorrow for game two of the series at 4 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
