No. 25 OSU Wins the Sports Imports Classic with a 3-1 victory over Maryland – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State (10-3 overall) women’s volleyball team won the Sports Imports Classic Saturday night with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 25-18) victory over Maryland (6-6). OSU’s Mari Hole posted a match-high 25.5 points with 25 kills (.370) and one assist block. Buckeye Kelli Barhorst added 20 points with 13 kills (.500), four solo block and six assist blocks. Maryland’s Mary Cushman recorded a team-high 16.5 points with 15 kills (.217), a solo block and one assist block. Adreene Elliott added 11.5 points with eight kills (.286), a solo block and five assist blocks.
The first set was tied at one when a Caitlin Adams kill and an Ashleigh Crutcher-Adams block gave Maryland a 3-1 lead. OSU kills from Erin Sekinger and Barhorst tied the set at three. Tied at five, kills from Sekinger, Barhorst and Hole gave OSU an 8-5 lead. Leading, 13-10, an OSU error cut the lead to two but a Hole kill and an Emily Danks-Barhorst block made it 15-11 Buckeyes. An OSU error and kills from Adams and Elliott cut the margin to one at 15-14. OSU responded with a kill from Danks, a Barhorst solo block, a Maryland error, a Barhorst-Sekinger block, a Barhorst kill and two Barhorst-Sekinger blocks for a 22-14 lead. Two OSU errors made it 22-16. Kills from Sekinger and Maddi Lee made it 23-17. OSU reached set point with a kill from Hole at 24-17. An Elliott kill stopped the set point at 24-18. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Hole, won the set, 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .424 for the set to .129 for Maryland.
With set two tied at one, kills from Sekinger, Barhorst and Danks and a Maryland error gave OSU a 5-1 lead that they would hold for the set. Trailing 11-7, an OSU error, a Remy McBain kill and a McBain-Elliott block cut the margin to one at 11-10. OSU kills from Danks, Sekinger and Hole, a Maryland error and two Sarah Mignin ace serves gave the Buckeyes a 17-10 lead. Kills from Lee and Cushman along with an OSU error made it 17-13. Leading, 19-15, kills from Barhorst and Hole made the lead six at 21-15. Kills from Elliott and Hole made it 22-16. A Maryland error and a kill from Hole gave OSU set point at 24-16. Hole, with a kill, won the set, 25-16, to take a 2-0 for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .441 for the set to .100 for Maryland.
Ohio State opened set three with two kills from Danks and one from Hole for a 3-0 lead. Maryland trailed 12-9, when kills from Cushman and McBain and a Cushman solo block tied the set at 12. A Terrapin error and kills from Danks and Anna Faul gave OSU a 15-12 lead. At 16-13, a Cushman kill and an OSU error made it 16-15. At 17-16, a Carlisle Abele-Elliott block tied the set at 17. An Elliott solo block gave Maryland an 18-17 lead. OSU tied the set at 18 with a Barhorst kill. Tied at 23, a Barhorst solo block made it 24-23 and match point for OSU. Cushman, with a kill, stopped the match point at 24-all. OSU earned a second match point at 25-24 with a Sekinger kill. Maryland stopped the point with a Lee kill at 25-all. A Lee-Elliott block gave Maryland set point at 26-25. The Terrapins won the set, 27-25, with a Lee kill to cut the OSU lead to 2-1. Maryland hit .222 for the set to .220 for Ohio State.
After three early ties in set four, the last at three-all, Ohio State used a kill from Barhorst with two from Hole and a Maryland error to take a 7-3 lead. Leading, 11-7, two Maryland errors, a kill from Danks and a Mignin ace serve gave Ohio State a 15-7 lead. Maryland responded with kills from Cushman and Adams, an OSU error and a Sarah Harper ace serve to cut the lead to four at 15-11. OSU held a 22-18 lead when a Maryland error made the lead five at 23-18. Hole closed out the set with two consecutive kills for a 25-18 set win and a 3-1 victory in the match. OSU hit .379 for the set to .105 for Maryland.
Ohio State hit .349 for the match to .146 for Maryland. OSU had a 67-46 advantage in kills and a 59-42 edge in assists. OSU’s Taylor Sherwin posted a match-high 55 assists with Maryland’s McBain recording 28. The Buckeyes edged the Terrapins in aces, 3-2. OSU’s Mignin recorded a match-high three while Harper posted a team-high two for Maryland. OSU gave up 10 service errors to three for the Terrapins. Defensively, OSU had a 67-52 margin in digs. Mignin posted a match-high 25 for the Buckeyes while Harper had a team-high 14 for Maryland. At the net, Ohio State had a 12-9 advantage in team blocks. Barhorst, with four solos and six assist blocks posted a match-high 10 blocks in the match. Elliott had a team-high six blocks for Maryland with a solo and five assists.
Named to the Sports Imports Classic All-Tournament Team were Akron’s Jill Paluch, Maryland’s Cushman, Albany’s Casey Wright and Brooke Stanley and OSU’s Barhorst. Buckeye Mignin was named the most valuable defensive player and Hole was honored as the most valuable player. OSU was 3-0 for the Classic with Albany 2-1, Maryland 1-2 and Akron 0-3.
Ohio State begins Big Ten Conference play next weekend with matches at Iowa and No. 10 Nebraska.
