Athletes of the Week
• Michael Cress, a senior from Dublin, Ohio, guided the Ohio State men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional. The team’s finish advanced the Buckeyes to the 2011 NCAA Championships held in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5. After opening the tournament tied for 11th, the Buckeyes jumped eight spots on day two and shot a 9-under 279 as a team. The Scarlet and Gray went on to shoot a 2-under 286 and took fourth with a 1-over 865 as a team. The second-round surge was headed by Cress with a 4-under 68. He finished the last day with another 68 to finished tied for fourth individually, carding a 5-under 211 over three days. Cress recorded a team-best 17 birdies, including seven on the final day. His three-day total of 211 tied a career-low over 54 holes which was also set this season.
• After winning the first Big Ten indoor title in program history in February, the Ohio State women’s track and field team followed that historic first by winning its first Big Ten outdoor title in program history last weekend. In recognition of her outstanding individual efforts, junior All-American Christina Manning was honored May 18 by the Big Ten conference office for her achievements during the season and over the weekend. Manning, a Waldorf, Md., native, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships after claiming Big Ten titles in the 100m dash, 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. The junior captured those same accolades after the Big Ten indoor championships as well. With a facility record being set in each of Manning’s title performances, the All-American truly enjoyed a weekend to remember in Iowa City.
Athletics
• Three Buckeyes – hockey defenseman Sean Duddy, swimmer Justin Farra and golfer Brad Smith – have been named to the Capital One Academic All-America All-District IV Men’s At-Large First Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The trio now moves on to the ballot for the national Academic All-America teams.
Baseball (25-25, 13-11 Big Ten)
Head coach: Greg Beals
• Ohio State split a doubleheader with Minnesota, dropping game one 3-2 while winning the nightcap 5-1, May 19 at Target Field in Minneapolis.
• Ohio State shut out Minnesota, 3-0, in the rubber game of a three-game set May 21 at Target Field in Minneapolis. With the win, the Buckeyes finish the season with a 25-25 record, 13-11 in the Big Ten. In addition, Ohio State earns the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament starting Wednesday at Huntington Park in Columbus.The Buckeyes and Gophers will square off again in the first game of the tournament at 12:05 p.m. May 25.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• In just the second year under head coach Donnie Darr, Ohio State has qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing fourth in the NCAA West Regional. The Buckeyes third round score of 288 (-2) brought their three-round total to 865 (+1) on the par 72, 6,947-yard The Farms Golf Club in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
• Ohio State closed out the season May 21 with a 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships on the par 72, 6,260-yard Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. The Buckeyes concluded the four-day tournament with a 69-over 1,221 after finishing 17-over on the day.
No. 10 Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• Andy Teitelbaum, head coach of the 10th-ranked Ohio State rowing team, was named 2011 Big Ten Coach of the Year, the conference announced May 18. It is the third time Teitelbaum has earned the distinction as he was named coach of the year in 2002 and 2006. The 2011 Big Ten Champion, the Buckeyes also won the league title in 2002 and 2006.
Men’s Soccer
Head coach: John Bluem
• With the spring season in the rearview mirror, the Ohio State men’s soccer team now looks forward to the 2011 campaign and welcoming six student-athletes who have committed to join the Buckeyes this fall. Zach Dobey, Adam Gorski, Marques Mayoras, Santiago Velez and Brady Wahl all signed NCAA National Letters of Intent, while Kenny Cunningham will don the Scarlet & Gray as a walk-on.
Softball
Head coach: Linda Kalafatis
• Alicia Herron, a junior co-captain shortstop on the Ohio State softball team, was named a third team All-Big Ten selection, the league office announced May 18. Herron, a native of Cypress, Calif., claims her third-consecutive league honor, becoming the 10th Buckeye in program history and seventh player under head coach Linda Kalafatis to be honored at least three times as an All-Big Ten award winner.
No. 4 Men’s Tennis (34-2, 10-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Fourth-ranked Ohio State downed No. 36 Tulsa, 4-0, May 19 to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
• Fourth-ranked Ohio State beat No. 5 Baylor, 4-2, May 21 to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The Buckeyes will meet Virginia at 3 p.m. ET May 23 for a chance to play in the championship match.
Men’s Track and Field
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Junior All-American Michael Hartfield was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year and Athlete of Championships May 18 by the conference office in recognition of his outstanding outdoor season and remarkable performance at the Big Ten championship meet.
Women’s Track and Field
Head coach: Karen Dennis
• After winning the first Big Ten indoor title in program history in February, the Buckeyes followed that up by winning their first Big Ten outdoor title in program history last weekend. In recognition of their performance Christina Manning and head coach Karen Dennis were recognized May 18 for their success during the season and over the weekend. Manning was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year while Dennis earned Coach of the Year honors.
Wrestling
Head coach: Tom Ryan
• C.J. Magrum, Ian Paddock and Colt Sponseller, captains of the 2010-11 Ohio State wrestling team, were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team, the NWCA announced May 19.
