Athletics Good Stuff – Ohio State Buckeyes

Athletics
• Six individual titles and 100 total points on the final day of competition helped the women’s track and field team win its first conference outdoor title at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. With the win, the Buckeyes pulled off a season sweep of the conference championships, following up their historic victory at the indoor championships in February. Ohio State concluded the meet with 135 points. Leading the Buckeye surge on Championship Sunday was All-American Christina Manning, who stated her case for Athlete of the Championships with individual wins in the 100m dash and 100m hurdles and a third victory as the anchor of the 4x100m relay team. With three titles on the day, the junior’s career total now stands at five. All-American Madison McNary joined Manning as a member of the Big Ten champion 4x100m relay team. In addition, McNary won an individual title in the 200m. Junior Shaniqua McGinnis returned to form with the second conference title of her career in the 400m dash. Rounding out the Buckeye individual title winners was junior Kelcey McKinney, who captured the first Big Ten title of her career with a PR of 12.80m (42 ft.) in the triple jump, the fifth-best mark in school history.
• For the third time in program history (2002 and 2006), the rowing program captured the Big Ten title behind Top 3 finishes by all six boats. The Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four won their respective races to help propel the Scarlet and Gray to 142 points. Following the championship, four Buckeyes were named all-conference. Ulrike Denker and Claudia Schiwy earned First Team distinctions, while Carolin Helmholz and Claire-Louise Bode were honored with Second Team laurels.
Athletics
• The Ohio State University Golf Club golf professional Brian Kelly was honored by the Southern Ohio PGA and named the 2011 Junior Golf Leader of the Year, the SOPGA office announced May 11.
• With 10 sports represented, Ohio State student-athletes sang, danced and laughed their way en route to raising $11,400 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus at the Buckeyes Got Talent show held May 10.
Baseball (23-24, 11-10 Big Ten)
Head coach: Greg Beals
• Ohio State dropped the first game of a two-game series against nationally-ranked Oklahoma State, 16-3, May 10 in front of 848 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
• Ohio State received a tremendous start from pitcher John Kuchno, terrific relief work and three late-inning runs to come from behind and defeat Oklahoma State, 3-2, to gain a split of this midweek series May 11 in front of 859 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
• Ohio State dropped a 7-0 decision to Iowa May 13 in the first game of a three-game set at Bill Davis Stadium.
• Iowa tied the score with a four-run ninth inning and then added a run in the 10th to stun the Buckeyes, 9-8, in the second game of this three game series May 14.
• Mothers and fathers and family and friends were a big part of Senior Day at Bill Davis Stadium May 15, but Mother Nature played an even bigger role. In a game delayed nearly two hours because of rain, Ohio State defeated Iowa, 10-4, before a crowd that was as large as 1,617 before the rain hit.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• The Ohio State men’s golf team earned a bid to an NCAA Men’s Golf Regional, the NCAA selection committee announced Monday. The 32nd-ranked and fifth-seeded Buckeyes will travel to San Diego, Calif., to compete in the 54-hole San Diego Regional May 19-21.
• Members of the Ohio State men’s golf team competed in the 18-hole U.S. Open Local Qualifier May 9 at the par 72, 7,228-yard Kinsale Golf Club in Powell, Ohio. Sophomore Zack Sobel and senior Bo Hoag each earned a spot in the Top 8 to advance to the U.S. Open Sectional.
Men’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Rustam Sharipov
• Rustam Sharipov (roos-TOM SHARE-ee-pahv) has been named the head coach for the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, Heather Lyke, associate athletics director for sport administration, announced May 11. Sharipov, who has been an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma the last six seasons, brings the experience of three Olympic medals, including two golds, to Columbus as the eighth head coach in program history.
No. 10 Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• In a Big Ten championship that came down to the final race, 10th-ranked Ohio State captured the program’s third conference title May 15 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., thanks partly to the First Varsity Eight’s ability to hold off Michigan’s crew by .48 seconds.
Softball (14-37, 3-17 Big Ten)
Head coach: Linda Kalafatis
• Alicia Herron, a junior co-captain on the Ohio State softball team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Second Team for the second time in her career May 6. The third-year starter at shortstop, Herron leads the team with a .358 batting average while maintaining a grade-point average greater than 3.30 in speech and hearing science.
• Ohio State dropped its final two home games against Penn State May 11 night at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes fell, 10-2, in game one and lost, 4-3, in nine innings in a close game two against the NIttany Lions.
• Ohio State fell, 11-3, in six innings at Wisconsin May 13 in Madison.
• Ohio State lost, 8-0, in six innings at Wisconsin May 14 to conclude the 2011 season. The Badgers notched a six-run third inning en route to the run-rule victory against the Buckeyes at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
No. 4 Men’s Tennis (32-2, 10-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Matt Allare and Blaz Rola were named the ITA Midwest Region Senior of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced.
• Fourth-ranked Ohio State shut out Ball State, 4-0, May 13 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Team Championship at Stickney Tennis Center to advance to its ninth-consecutive regional final. Serving as host of the opening rounds of the NCAA championship, the Buckeyes extended their home win streak to 127 matches.
• After a slight rain delay, fourth-ranked Ohio State defeated No. 30 Notre Dame, 4-0, in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship May 14 at Stickney Tennis Center and the VTC in Columbus, Ohio. The victory marks the sixth-consecutive year the Scarlet and Gray have advanced to the Round of 16.
Men’s Track and Field
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Freshman Cody Marshall captured the first Big Ten pole vault title of his career May 13 at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, helping Ohio State to third place at the end of the first day of competition from the University of Iowa.
• Ohio State, on the heels of individual titles from Michael Hartfield and Heath Nickles, jumped to second place at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships after two days of competition from a rained-soaked University of Iowa campus.
• Junior All-American Thomas Murdaugh won an individual title in the 400m dash and anchored the 4x400m relay team to a first-place finish May 15 at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships at the University of Iowa, helping the Ohio State men’s track and field team to a third place finish.
Women’s Track and Field

• Six individual titles and 100 total points on the final day of competition helped Ohio State win its first conference outdoor title May 15 at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Iowa.
No. 1 Men’s Volleyball (26-6, 11-1 MIVA)
Head coach: Pete Hanson
• Ohio State setter Steven Kehoe have been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Week. Named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, he directed the Buckeye offense to wins over No. 3 seed Penn State (24-7), 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23), in the semifinals and No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara (18-15), 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-29, 22-25, 15-9), to win the program’s first national championship.
