Vick Advances to All-American Championships Singles Main Draw – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Nelson Vick, a redshirt-sophomore on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, was victorious for the third consecutive day in the qualifying portion of the 2011 D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
With the win, Vick became one of 16 qualifiers who earned a chance to compete in the singles main draw Thursday. The Grafton, Wis., native will face Christopher Aumueller of Nebraska at 8 a.m. CT.
Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen earned the chance to compete in the doubles main draw following an 8-4 win over East Tennessee State’s Jesus Bandres and Sander Gille. The Buckeye tandem is one of eight doubles teams to qualify. McCarthy and Van Engelen will face the top-seeded doubles team in the tournament when they meet Georgia Tech’s Kevin King and Juan Spir at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
Connor Smith lost for the first time as a Buckeye with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 setback to Mousheg Hovhannisyan of Pepperdine in the final round of qualifying.
Other Buckeyes who already had pre-qualified for the singles main draw include Blaz Rola (No. 1 overall seed), Chase Buchanan (No. 4), Peter Kobelt and McCarthy.
Pre-qualifying in doubles for Ohio State were Buchanan and Rola (No. 3 overall), as well as Kobelt and Smith.
