Athletes of the Week
• Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Lampson earned the first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor of the 2010 men’s soccer season after posting back-to-back shutouts in the team’s wins over College of Charleston, 1-0, Friday and Buffalo, 2-0, Sunday.
• Goalkeeper Rachel Middleman was named Big Ten freshman of the week after 165 scoreless minutes in goal in a pair of shutout Ohio State victories over Dayton and Akron. The Mars, Pa. native has posted a spotless 4-0-0 record with a 0.46 goals-against average in six games played.
Athletics
• Ohio State student-athletes combined for an impressive 6,883 service hours during the 2009-10 season. Working with more than 64 different organizations, the student-athletes surpassed the 2008-09 total by 355 hours.
• With nearly every varsity sport clocking service hours, the men’s track and field team led the way with 905 hours, followed closely the by cheerleading squad who notched 873. The two teams also posted the most hours per athlete with 15.1 and 17.1, respectively. The football team, who ranked third among the 36 Ohio State teams with 642.5 hours, visited over 46 local schools through organizations such as the 2nd and 7 Foundation.
No. 14 Field Hockey (2-1)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• In the opening game of the 2010 campaign, No. 14 Ohio State defeated Ohio, 2-1, in overtime Aug. 31 in Athens. Jena Cacciatore scored the game-winning overtime goal while Aisling Coyle factored into both OSU goals. The overtime victory over the Bobcats marks the 400th win in the Buckeyes’ 40th year of the program being a varsity sport.
• In the opening games at the new Buckeye Varsity Field, Ohio State fell in overtime, 2-1, to No. 8 Syracuse Sept. 3 before defeating Kent State 4-0 Sept. 5. Cacciatore scored twice for the Buckeyes vs. Kent State, while Coyle had a goal in each home game. Berta Queralt totaled four assists during the three games.
No. 2 Football (1-0)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• No. 2 Ohio State looked terrific offensively and stubborn defensively in rolling to a season-opening win over the Marshall Thundering Herd, 45-7, Sept. 2 in front of 105,040 fans in a night game at Ohio Stadium.
• Linebacker Brian Rolle, with an interception for a score and four tackles, is the defensive player of the week. Tailback Brandon Saine, who rushed for 103 yards and two scores, is the offensive player of the week. Nate Oliver is the player of the week on the special units. Mike Brewster was named as the Jim Parker lineman of the week. Cameron Heyward received the Attack Force award on defense. The Jack Tatum big hit of the week went to Tyler Moeller.
• Moeller also was named Big Ten defensive player of the week after leading the Buckeyes with six tackles in the contest and also recorded a quarterback sack, pass break-up, two TFLs and a forced fumble.
No. 18 Men’s Soccer (2-0)
Head coach: John Bluem
• No. 18 Ohio State opened the regular season with a 1-0 win over the College of Charleston Sept. 3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the nightcap of the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic. Chris Hegngi scored the game-winner in the 23rd minute off assists from Sam Scales and Omar Vallejo.
• Konrad Warzycha converted on a pair of penalty kicks to lead No. 18 Ohio State in its 2-0 win over Buffalo Sept. 5 in the finale of the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic. Following the event, Buckeyes Chris Hegngi, Matt Lampson and Warzycha were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Women’s Soccer (4-1-1)
Head coach: Lori Walker
• Ohio State picked up its fourth win in a row, defeating Akron 3-0 Sept. 5 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Scoring for the Buckeyes were Liz Sullivan, Kristen Niederhaus and Tiffany Cameron.
• Ohio State won its third game in a row, defeating Dayton 1-0 Sept. 3 in Dayton, Ohio. Cassie Dickerson gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead when she nailed home a rebound off a free kick by Courtney Jenkins in the 49th minute.
• Forward Lauren Granberg was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Aug. 30. The sophomore scored the equalizer and game-winning goals for the Buckeyes in a 3-1 come-from-behind win over West Virginia Aug. 29.
Women’s Volleyball (5-1)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Ohio State competed in the Kentucky Classic Sept. 3-4 in Lexington, Ky. The Buckeyes opened with a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) against South Florida Friday with four players recording double-figure points – Emily Danks (14.5), Anna Szerszen (11.5), Kelli Barhorst (10.5) and Katie Dull (10).
• Then, behind 12 kills from Dull, the Buckeyes posted a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-12, 29-27) over Miami (Ohio) Saturday, before falling 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20) to No. 16 Kentucky in the final match of the Kentucky Classic. Dull posted a team-high 16 points on 16 kills against the Wildcats.
