Athletics Good Stuff – Ohio State Buckeyes

Athletes of the Week
• Aisling Coyle, a junior on the Ohio State field hockey team, helped the Buckeyes to wins over No. 12 Michigan and UC Davis last weekend with four goals and one assist. Against the Wolverines, Coyle tallied an assist and a goal to lead Ohio State to its fourth-consecutive Big Ten win. She posted her second hat trick of the season in the 4-0 shutout over the Aggies. Coyle has scored a goal in 14 of the Buckeyes’ 16 games this year. In Ohio State’s seven-game win streak, Coyle has posted 28 points. She leads the team in goals and points with 21 and 47, respectively.
• Senior Matt Allare of the men’s tennis team had a busy, yet successful run at the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional, which ran from Oct. 21-25 in South Bend, Ind. Allare, a native of Mason, Ohio, advanced to both the singles and doubles finals of the event. On the final day of competition, Allare played four total matches – two singles matches and two doubles matches – before finishing the event the singles runner-up and the doubles champion with teammate Peter Kobelt. Allare lost the singles match to teammate Blaz Rola 7-5, 6-4, but rebounded with a 9-8 victory in doubles against Illinois’ Dennis Nevolo and Abe Souza. With the victory, Allare qualified for the 2010 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will take place Nov. 4-7 in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament serves as the second of three premier national collegiate tennis events.
Baseball
Head coach: Greg Beals
• With its backs to the wall and needing a win to force a deciding Game 5, the Ohio State Gray team took an early lead and cruised to 9-2 victory over the Scarlet Oct. 20 at Bill Davis Stadium.
• Team Scarlet, coached by Josh Newman, scratched out a run in its last at-bat to earn a hard-fought and well-played 3-2 victory over the Gray Oct. 21 in the deciding game of the 2010 Scarlet and Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium.
No. 23 Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• Ohio State competed in the opening round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational Oct. 24, firing a team score of 299 (+11) on the par 72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Fla. The Buckeyes’ score puts them in eighth place heading into the second round.
• Senior Bo Hoag fired a 1-under 71 to lead the Buckeyes and is only two strokes back from the individual lead.
Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
• Ohio State concluded the Landfall Tradition in ninth place Oct. 24 to wrap up its fall schedule in Wilmington, N.C. The Buckeyes ended on a high note by carding their lowest round of the tournament with a 10-over 298 to finish with a team score of 908 on the par 72, 6,242-yard Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall.
• Sophomore co-captain Rachel Rohanna fired a final round of 1-under 71 to break into the top 10 and conclud the tournament in a tie for ninth at 221 (+5).
• Ohio State was without a key member at the Landfall Tradition as Susana Benavides, a sophomore from Cochabamba, Bolivia, was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, representing her home country in the 2010 World Amateur Championship.
Fencing
Head coach: Vladimir Nazlymov
• Several Buckeyes returned from action at the North American Cup (NAC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, Oct. 18. The group finished with 13 Top 25 finishes, including six Top 10 and two bronze performances.
No. 6 Field Hockey (13-3, 4-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• Ohio State moved into a tie for first place in the Big Ten after defeating No. 12 Michigan, 2-1, Oct. 22 in Ann Arbor. Junior co-captain Aisling Coyle and freshman Paula Pastor-Pitarque scored for the Buckeyes.
• In the first meeting in program history, the Buckeyes defeated UC Davis, 4-0, Oct. 23 in a neutral site matchup in Ann Arbor. Coyle had a hat trick as the Buckeyes stretched their winning streak to seven games.
• Sophomore Berta Queralt and junior Jenn Sciulli were named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Oct. 18. The pair helped lead the Buckeyes to conference victories against No. 7 Michigan State, 5-1, Oct. 15 and No. 11 Penn State, 3-0, Oct. 17 in Columbus.
No. 11 Football (7-1, 3-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Playing with a bit of an edge off a loss last week and with a firm realization of the havoc that Purdue is capable of creating, No. 11 Ohio State shutout the Boilermakers, 49-0, Oct. 23 in the 89th Homecoming Game at Ohio Stadium.
• Junior Terrelle Pryor enjoyed another big day for the Buckeyes, completing 16-22 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, passing Troy Smith for third place on the all-time passing yards list. Dane Sanzenbacher hauled in four passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, while Dan Herron paced the Scarlet and Gray on the ground, totaling two touchdowns and 74 yards on 16 carries.
• Cameron Heyward and Ross Homan are two of 23 finalists for the 2010 Lott IMPACT Trophy, awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year.
Men’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Miles Avery
• Senior Brandon Wynn helped the U.S National Team to a fourth-place finish at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships Oct. 22 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Wynn, the U.S. and NCAA champion on rings, posted a team-high 15.533 on rings to lead the squad to the third highest total score (44.833) out of the eight teams on the event.
Men’s Hockey (2-3-0, 1-1-0 CCHA)
Head coach: Mark Osiecki
• Ohio State dropped its Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener to Ferris State, 2-1, Oct. 22 at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. All the scoring came in the second period, as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead before the Buckeyes cut the deficit to one with 1:40 remaining in the stanza.
• Trailing 3-2 entering the final period, Ohio State scored three unanswered goals for a 5-3 victory at Ferris State Oct. 23. After Sergio Somma tied the score at 3 in the third period, John Albert put the Buckeyes ahead at 10:51 and sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Albert (2g, 1a), Shane Sims (1g, 2a) and Somma (1g, 2a) each had three points for the Buckeyes, while freshman defenseman Curtis Gedig had two helpers.
No. 9/10 Women’s Hockey (4-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA)
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• The Buckeyes dropped an overtime heartbreaker at No. 1/2 Wisconsin Oct. 22 at the Kohl Center. After a 1-0 OSU lead at the first intermission, it was a barnburner after that with the teams exchanging 10 goals the remaining 40 minutes for a 6-5 final in front of a crowd of 2,048 in Madison.
• Ohio State cut its deficit to one goal twice in the second period, but Wisconsin pulled away with two goals in the last 3 minutes of regulation, including an empty-netter, for the 5-2 win Oct. 23 in front of a crowd of 2,396 at the Kohl Center.
• Laura McIntosh and Becky Allis earned WCHA Player of the Week awards, the league announced Oct. 20. McIntosh picked up her first offensive player of the week award of her career while Allis was the second-consecutive Buckeye to be named rookie of the week.
No. 25 Men’s Soccer (7-5-2, 2-2-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: John Bluem
• Ryan Lee scored his first career goal, but a pair of unanswered tallies from Penn State led the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 overtime win vs. Ohio State Oct. 23 in front of 3,204 fans at Jeffrey Field in University Park.
No. 17 Women’s Soccer (13-3-1, 7-1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Lori Walker
• Ohio State dropped a 2-1 decision, its first conference loss, to No. 13 Illinois on Buckeyes Go Pink night Oct. 21 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
• The Buckeyes came back to top Purdue, 2-1, on a header by Tiffany Cameron in the 87th minute Oct. 24 in West Lafayette.
• Goalkeeper Rachel Middleman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after the Buckeyes knocked off Wisconsin and No. 15 Minnesota last weekend. It is the second freshman of the week award for Middleman this season.
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Senior Matt Allare and freshman Blaz Rola cruised to straight-set victories as both Buckeyes advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Oct. 24 at Notre Dame. Allare downed teammate Devin McCarthy 7-6 (1), 6-3 to move on. Rola, the fifth-seed, won a 6-2, 6-2 match, defeating Illinois’ Dennis Nevolo, who was the No. 4-seed in the bracket.
• In doubles action, two Buckeye pairs moved on to the semifinals. The No.9-seeded duo of Balazs Novak and McCarthy defeated fourth-seed Stephen Havens and Tyler Davis from Notre Dame, 8-6. Allare and Peter Kobelt, the No. 5 seed, also advanced to the main draw doubles semifinals by defeating Northwestern duo Spencer Wolff and Josh Graves, 8-6.
Women’s Tennis
Head coach: Chuck Merzbacher
• Senior Paloma Escobedo remains alive in the ITA/USTA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Texas native battled past teammate Kara Cecil in straight sets Oct. 24 in the third round of main draw singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Women’s Volleyball (17-6, 5-5 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Ohio State lost to No. 9 Penn State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) Oct. 20 in St. John Arena. Emily Danks recorded a team-high nine points with Katie Dull adding 8.5. Danks had six kills, two ace serves and a solo block while Dull collected seven kills, a solo block and one assist block.
• Ohio State closed out the first half of the Big Ten season with a 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-11) upset of No. 22 Northwestern Oct. 22 in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Dull posted tied for the match high with 20.5 points with Danks adding 13.5. Dull recorded a match-high 17 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and three assist blocks in the contest. Danks added eight kills, four ace serves and three assist blocks.
• Kelli Barhorst was named the Big Ten Player of the Week Oct. 18 for her play in victories over Iowa and 19th-ranked Minnesota.
