OHIO STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Dane Sanzenbacher, senior wide receiver
On mindset coming into the Purdue game
“The only thing after a tough loss is to come back with a win. I’ve never been a part of this team where we had to come off a loss straight into a team that beat us last year. We all had a lot of emotions coming into the game. Not a lot needed to be said; everyone was ready.”
On the pass game
“The start run really helped. The more we can feel comfortable running the ball the more it helps. It allows us to settle back as receivers. I think as an offense, we sometimes struggle when we feel we have to force the pass.”
Andrew Sweat, junior linebacker
On the improvement of the defense
“Last week we weren’t aggressive. We had to get back this week to attacking. Coach Fickell always tells us to go out and make sure we do the little things well. This week we got back to working on the little things and making sure we were doing our job.”
On the guidance of Ross Homan
“He’s been awesome. He has a great understanding of the game and he’s a great linebacker. After he got hurt last week he was on the sidelines teacher me. He’s really been a great mentor.”
On the shutout
“It’s awesome. It’s what you try to obtain. You don’t want them to score points so when you can stop them completely it’s great. No matter what offense we face I think we can stop them as long as were ready.”
Aaron Gant, senior defensive back
On the defensive shutout
“We’ve been close on a couple of games, and to finally get one; it is a great feeling.”
J.B. Shugarts, junior offensive lineman
On playing with a foot injury
“It has been hurting probably since the Rose Bowl game; I should be alright with rest and recuperation. I’m looking forward to the bye week to be able to rest it.”
On playing against Purdue defensive lineman Ryan Kerrigan
“Obviously he is a great player. He had a great season last year and is playing well this season. I think the offensive line in general stepped it up.”
Corey Brown, freshman wide receiver
On his touchdown during the game
“Terelle made a good throw to me and I jumped up and caught it. I thought I was stopped at the one-yard line, which made me mad. But DeVier came over and slapped me on my helmet, so I know I had scored. It was wild.”
On being incorporated into the offense more
“I’m glad that Coach Hazell is giving me the chance to play. We put a lot of work into it all – all of us freshmen have. Our training here is phenomenal. DeVier and I worked on our routes everyday this summer. He had me put my head in the playbook too. That’s when you can play at your highest level, when you’re comfortable knowing the plays.”
Orhian Johnson, sophomore strong safety
On his first career interception
“The coaches had a great game plan. I just wanted to go out and execute. I missed one I thought I should have had earlier in the game, so it was rewarding to get the one that I did.”
On the Ohio State’s defense
“We’ve had some young guys come in and get some plays, which we need with all the injuries in the secondary. We felt like we started flat last week, so it was important to start off and hold them early. We can’t change what happened last week.”
Cameron Heyward, senior defensive lineman
On preparation for the Purdue game
“When we watched film and found problems, it wasn’t normally just one guy out of position, but today we did a great job of doing our individual assignments and we communicated well, which helped us bounce right back as a defense.”
On improving from the beginning of the season
“I hope we’re improving. It’s important to build on each game and learn from all of them. It’s rough to lose, but we can use it as a teaching tool. The season is not just one game, but a building effort. We need to get better and improve.”
Bryant Browning, senior offensive lineman
On Purdue defensive lineman Ryan Kerrigan
“He is a great player who never stops and is rarely out of position. We watched him in a lot of film. It was important for us to know where he was all the time.”
On the Captains’ breakfast
“I think it’s great timing after coming off a loss. They give us an example and show us what we’re capable of doing this season while keeping our heads up. All we can do is execute on the next play. The entire senior class has really helped keep this team together this season.”
Jermale Hines, senior defensive back
On the difference from the Purdue game last year
“I think our guys just fought hard today. Today we wanted to come out and fight our hardest because we knew they had the confidence from beating us last year. We wanted to come out and take care of business.”
On the playing time for reserves
“We expect them to come in and perform well. We talk to them and keep them calm on the field and just let them play football. They have to just keep going and we expect the same out of them on the field as we do anyone else. They just have to focus.”
PURDUE POSTGAME QUOTES
Danny Hope, Purdue head coach
Opening statement
“We talked about a lot of things we wanted to do today. Of course we didn’t play well. There were several things we did wrong and we need to make sure we pull together next time. We gave up a lot of big plays and big chunks of yardage. A lot of times we had three or five freshmen in there against one of the best teams in the country.”
On Ohio State receivers being open
“They weren’t open, they were wide open. This secondary is as good a group I’ve ever been around, but this group is very young. We came in the game without Albert Evans and Mike Eargle so we had to activate a freshman, Normando Harris. He’s a good player, an outstanding prospect, but was on the scout team until Tuesday. He did a lot of good things but made some mistakes.”
Sean Robinson, freshman quarterback
On his play against Ohio State
“We have to move forward and do things accordingly. I am just trying to take in as much as I can. I felt more comfortable today. At Minnesota I was a little nervous.”
On getting repetitions early in his career
“The repetitions and mental repetitions are good. Sometimes I forget we are not playing high school football and I cannot always run anymore. For me, getting out there and getting comfortable is important.”
Logan Link, junior strong safety
On the game
“I give all credit to Ohio State. They have great athletes and great coaches. They played hard and made more plays than we did.”
On the excitement for the game
“I have never been this excited to play a game before. I wanted to go out there and do whatever I could to help us win.”
