COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s swimming teams will each jump start their 2010-11 campaigns Friday, Oct. 22, with the annual co-ed Scarlet and Gray Meet at 5 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Saturday at 9 a.m. the men’s team will swim against some of its alumni in the traditional alumni meet. There is no admission charge for either event.
Men’s swimming coach Bill Wadley is in his 22nd season as coach of the Buckeyes and is coming off his finest season: a 2010 Big Ten championship and a Top 10 finish at the NCAA championships. Wadley was named the Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year for his team’s efforts.
The team returns 12 point scorers off that Big Ten championship team, including Big Ten champions Elliott Keefer (100 breaststroke), Andrew Elliott (100 backstroke) and these members of the 200 freestyle relay team: Lincoln Fahrbach and Tim Phillips.
The meet will also kick off year No. 3 for women’s swimming coach Bill Dorenkott. His team is coming off its best finish at a Big Ten Championships – fifth – in 13 years. Leading returnees for the Buckeyes will be NCAA qualifiers Samantha Cheverton and Shannon Draves. The team also returns 12 individuals who scored points at the 2010 Big Ten championships.
“This meet is an awesome opportunity to give our first year athletes a preview of how a college dual meet runs,” Dorenkott said. “Additionally, it will give us a glimpse of where we are from a training and competition standpoint.”
The Official Start of the Season
Ohio State will host Division III power Kenyon College next Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The meet will be a co-ed event and will feature the return of former men’s assistant coach Jessen Book. He is the new women’s coach at Kenyan, his alma mater. Missouri graduate Chris Peters replaced him on Bill Wadley’s coaching staff.
