Buckeyes Drop 3-0 Decision to Ninth-Ranked Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (16-6 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) lost to ninth-ranked Penn State (16-4, 6-3), 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) Wednesday evening in St. John Arena. OSU’s Emily Danks recorded a team-high nine points with Katie Dull adding 8.5. Danks had six kills, two ace serves and a solo block while Dull collected seven kills, a solo block and one assist block. Penn State’s Blair Brown recorded a match-high 14 points with 13 kills and one ace serve. Arielle Wilson added 10.5 points with nine kills, a solo block and one assist block for the Nittany Lions.
With set one tied at one, an OSU error and kills from Deja McClendon and Brown opened a 4-1 Penn State lead. Betsy Hone’s kill and a Buckeye error made it 5-3. A Wilson kill, an Ariel Scott-Wilson block and a Brown ace serve gave the Nittany Lions an 8-3 lead. At 12-7, a kill from Danks started a five-point Buckeye run. A second kill from Danks, her two ace serves and a Penn State error tied the set at 12. The score advanced to 15-all when a Wilson kill, a Kristin Carpenter-Fatima Balza block and a McClendon kill forced an OSU time out at 18-15. At 19-16, an Allie Schwarzwalder kill and one from Kelli Barhorst cut the Penn State lead to one at 19-18. At 23-22, the Nittany Lions reached set point with a Wilson kill. Penn State won the set, 25-22 with a kill from McClendon to take a 1-0 lead in the match. PSU hit .333 for the set to .172 for the Buckeyes.
Set two saw 14 ties and six lead changes. Penn State opened the set with a Brown kill and a McClendon ace serve. A Penn State error and a kill from Danks tied the set at two. Tied at nine, a block by Danks and an Anna Szerszen kill gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. At 12-10, A Balza kill and an OSU error tied the set at 12. Kills from Scott and Wilson made it 14-12 Penn State. Two Penn State errors tied the set at 14. An exchange of points moved the score to 19-all. An OSU error and a Brown kill made it 21-19 Nittany Lions. Errors by both squads made it 22-20. An Alyssa D’Errico ace serve and a Barhorst kill made it 23-21. Penn State reached set point at 24-21 with a kill from Brown. The Nittany Lions won the set, 25-21, with a Scott kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes outhit the Nittany Lions, .256 to .250 in the set.
Penn State kills from Balza and Carpenter opened set three at 2-0. A Schwarzwalder kill and a Nittany Lion error tied the set at two. Two Penn State errors and one from OSU gave the Buckeyes a 4-3 lead. Two OSU errors, a D’Errico ace serve and a kill from Brown gave Penn State a 7-4 lead. At 14-9, kills from Danks and Barhorst and a Penn State error cut the lead to two at 14-12. Leading 16-14, kills from Wilson and Carpenter, a Wilson block and a Cathy Quilico ace serve opened a 20-14 Penn State lead. The Nittany Lions expanded the lead to eight at 23-15 where a Schwarzwalder kill and a Nittany Lion error cut the lead to 23-17. A McClendon kill gave Penn State match point at 24-17. A kill from Dull stopped the match point at 24-18. A McClendon kill won the set, 25-18, to give Penn State a 3-0 sweep in the match. The Nittany Lions hit .375 for the set to .154 for Ohio State.
For the match, Penn State hit .309 to .202 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 42-35 advantage in kills and a 37-32 margin in assists. Carpenter posted a match-high 35 assists for Penn State while Hone had 19 and Amanda Peterson, seven for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 5-2 edge in ace serves with PSU’s D’Errico and OSU’s Danks recording two each. Penn State gave up 10 service errors to nine for OSU. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 39-37 advantage in digs with Sarah Mignin recording a match-high 10 for Ohio State. At the net, each team posted three team blocks. OSU’s Dull and PSU’s Wilson shared match-high honors with each recording a solo and one assist block.
The Buckeyes return to the road Friday when they play at 22nd-ranked Northwestern (15-4, 5-3) at 8 p.m. EST.
