OSU Lantern – Even sunny skies wouldn’t have brightened up the day for Illinois. Amid a steady rain, Ohio State blanked the Illini 30-0 at Ohio Stadium on Saturday before a soaked crowd of 105,219. A war of words between the teams at midfield before kickoff didn’t translate into a stalemate after the first whistle, as the Buckeye defense forced three turnovers in recording their second straight shutout.

Ohio State back in top 10 in both polls
The Columbus Dispatch
September 27, 2009
After a weekend in which four top-10 teams lost, the Associated Press college football poll received a major makeover. Ohio State moved to the ninth spot from No. 13. The Buckeyes (3-1) also are No.9 in the USA Today coaches poll. The results have left the 60 sports writers and sportscasters on the AP panel struggling to fill out their ballots.

Defense (Heacock too) aces the exam vs. Illinois
The Columbus Dispatch
September 26, 2009
Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock There’s one link between Ohio State’s consecutive shutouts against Toledo and Illinois and the last time the Buckeyes had consecutive shutouts, against Minnesota and Illinois in 1996. That’s Heacock, a first-year assistant under John Cooper then and a 14-year assistant and co-defensive coordinator now.

Brian Rolle’s September of making plays continues with key theft for OSU against Illinois
Cleveland Plain Dealer
September 26, 2009
Chris Spielman wore Brian Rolle’s number a generation ago when he defined linebacking at Ohio State. But Rolle’s 36 is not an homage to him. Rolle’s number is a tribute to his older brother William, who played at Illinois State and was the Rolle model for Brian’s game.

Wilson deserves memorable moment
Sunday, September 27, 2009
The Columbus Dispatch
September 27, 2009
Illinois was on the move. Trailing 20-0 in the third quarter, the Illini had driven 42 yards to the Ohio State 34-yard line when quarterback Juice Williams rolled right and threw a pass that was tipped by hard-luck defensive end Lawrence Wilson. The ball seemed to hang in the air, much like the dark clouds that have stalked Wilson. The fifth-year senior didn’t know it yet, but the ghosts of two frustrating years of rehabilitation were about to be exorcised.

Ohio State Buckeyes don’t take four straight Big Ten titles for granted
Cleveland Plain Dealer
September 26, 2009
It’s that time of year when the seasons change and so does the attitude in the Big Ten. With a nip in the air, conference members can stop wallowing in a lack of national respect and once again look to themselves and start envying, or hating, Ohio State.

Herron finds some running room after slow start to season
The Columbus Dispatch
September 27, 2009
“Boom” had room for once, and he made the most of it. Yesterday against Illinois, probably no OSU player was more relieved to get the running game on track than Herron, who rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries for a solid 5.4-yard average.

There was more than grit and determination at work for an Ohio State offensive line that opened the way for 236 rushing yards yesterday in a 30-0 win over Illinois in Ohio Stadium. There were some new plays, too.

Not all Buckeye fans are foaming at the mouth about the coach
The Columbus Dispatch
September 27, 2009
Ohio State’s win over Toledo allowed the world to get back on its axis, so now the water balloons are being tossed from the other side. Regardless, everyone gets wet. My view: Jim Tressel is a true gentleman and a Big Ten beast.

Buckeye Leaves: Defense’s dominance a rare feat
Cleveland Plain Dealer
September 27, 2009
In the 30 seasons since the end of Woody Hayes’ tenure at Ohio State, the Buckeyes had two shutouts in a season only five times, and never under Jim Tressel: 1998, 1996, 1986, 1980 and 1979. In only two years did the Buckeyes have three shutouts: 1996 and 1990. Overall, in what is now 31 seasons since Hayes, the Buckeyes have 25 shutouts. Thirteen seasons included no shutouts, including a four-year stretch from 1999 to 2002.
