Gene Smith and Jim Tressel encourage ‘Best Fans in the Land’ for their continued support
COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the dorms filled and students returning to campus this week for the start of classes, the Ohio State Department of Athletics and the student fan group Block “O” hosted a ‘Buckeye Kick-off’ Monday afternoon in the football stadium.
The event had a pep rally feel to it, with the Ohio State Marching Band, Brutus, cheerleaders and dance team in attendance to set an energetic tone. Gene Smith, Ohio State Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, welcomed students back and encouraged them to maintain their role as the ‘Best Fans in the Land.’
Student-athletes were on hand to urge their fellow students to come out and support all 36 teams. Among those revving up the crowd were Ted Schoenfeldt of men’s volleyball, Taylor Candella of men’s track and field and Jon Diebler and Mark Titus of men’s basketball. Candella even gave the audience a look at his “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)” dance that helped his team win the 2009 Buckeyes Got Talent contest.
After learning the cheers and chants that Block “O” leads on football game day, Buckeye Kick-off concluded with some encouraging words from football head coach Jim Tressel.
