Buckeyes Win Sports Imports Classic Title with a 3-0 Victory over Xavier – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (12-1) women’s volleyball team, with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-6) victory over Xavier (7-6) won the Sports Imports Classic Saturday night in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes finished 3-0 in the Classic to Xavier’s 2-1 record. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a match-high 17.5 points in the contest with 13 kills (.476), an ace serve, three solo blocks and one assist block. Kristen Dozier added 10 points with six kills, three solo blocks and two assist blocks. Musketeer Alex Smith posted a match-high 13 points with 11 kill and two solo blocks.
A Dull kill and a Xavier error opened set one with Ohio State leading, 2-0. At 7-5, two kills from Smith and one from Kelly Ruth gave Xavier an 8-7 lead. Kills from Dull and Emily Danks made it 9-8, Ohio State. A Ruth kill tied the set at nine. At 11-all, a Dull kill and a Xavier error gave the Buckeyes a 13-11 lead. Leading, 15-13, a Musketeer error and a solo block from Anna Szerszen made it 17-13, OSU. A Buckeye error and kills from Clair Paszkiewicz and Smith cut the lead to one at 17-16. At 20-19, a Dull kill and a Xavier error made it 22-19 as the Musketeers called timeout. At 23-20, a Hillary Otte – Michelle Matia block and a kill from Otte cut the lead to one at 23-22 at OSU called timeout. An error by Xavier made it 24-22 and set point for Ohio State. Musketeer kills from Otte and Lauren Kaminsky tied the set at 24. A kill from Dozier made it 25-24, OSU and set point. A Smith kill stopped the set point at 25-25. Dull, with a kill made it 26-25 for OSU’s third set point. The Buckeyes won the set, 27-25 with a Danks-Mariah Booth block to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .265 in the set to .262 for Xavier.
Xavier opened set two with a 3-0 lead off two Buckeye errors and a Shannon Voors ace serve. Trailing, 8-6, a kill from Amanda Peterson and a Xavier error tied the set at eight. At nine-all, two Musketeer errors and a Dozier-Dull block gave Ohio State a 12-9 lead as Xavier called timeout. A Matia kill and a Smith solo block cut the margin to one at 12-11. Buckeye kills from Danks and Dozier and a Dull solo block made it 15-11. Ohio State held the lead, reaching set point at 24-17 with a kill From Dull. A Smith kill stopped the set point at 24-18. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-18, with a Dozier kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .391 for the set to .032 for Xavier.
The Buckeyes opened set three with five consecutive points starting with a Xavier error. Solo blocks by Dull and Dozier, followed by a Dull kill and her solo block made it 5-0, OSU. After an Emily Mayers kill and an OSU error, OSU scored the next six points to open an 11-2 lead. The run began with a Musketeer error and a Dozier kill. Two solo blocks from Dozier and a Dull kill made it 11-2. Ohio State continued to expand the lead and began a five-point run to reach match point at 24-5. Kills from Szerszen and Danks followed by two Xavier errors and a Booth kill made it match point at 24-5. A Smith kill stopped the match point at 24-6. Ohio State won the set, 25-6, with an Allie Schwarzwalder kill to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .556 for the set to -.360 for Xavier.
Ohio State hit .373 for the match to .031 for Xavier. The Buckeyes had a 36-31 margin in kills and a 3-1 advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up nine service errors to eight for the Musketeers. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 34-26 advantage in digs with OSU’s Chelsea Noble recording a match-high nine. Ohio State had a 13-3 margin in team blocks with Dozier posting a match-high five blocks with three solos and two assists for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Peterson posted a match-high 31 assists in the contest while Xavier’s Paszkiewicz recorded 22.
Named to the all-tournament team for Ohio State were Danks and Noble. OSU’s Peterson earned most valuable player honors. Also named to the team were Kelly Ruth and Stephanie Vorherr of Xavier, Beth Greulich of Cleveland State and Shari Luther of Bowling Green.
Ohio State begins Big Ten Conference play next weekend when the Buckeyes travel to Illinois Friday and Northwestern Saturday for 7 p.m. CT matches.
