Athletics
• The Big Ten Conference announced the inaugural class of Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients July 15, with Ohio State leading the way with 73 honorees. The newly-established award is given to student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or above for the previous academic year (excluding summer school). Recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their institution.
• Nationwide, The Ohio State University, the PGA TOUR and Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced today that the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational will be played through 2012 at The Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course. This year the event is scheduled for July 27 – August 2, 2009.
Baseball
Head coach: Bob Todd
• Baseball standouts Jake Hale and Alex Wimmers received honors when College Baseball Insider July 20 named them both third-team All-Americans.
Men’s Basketball
Head coach: Thad Matta
• Ohio State takes the court at Value City Arena in the final game of the 2009 Big Ten/ACC Challenge vs. Florida State Dec. 2. The game tips at 9:30 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
Football
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Ohio State was picked as the Big Ten preseason favorites for the 2009 football season by media members attending the conference’s football media day. In addition, the media panel named quarterback Terrelle Pryor Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• The Nationwide Tour is coming to Columbus July 30-Aug. 2 at the OSU Golf Club – Scarlet Course. On July 30, bring your BuckID to the gate for free admission and access to a viewing deck on the 13th hole exclusively for OSU faculty, staff and students.
Men’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Miles Avery
• Buckeye head coach Miles Avery announced the hiring of Blaine Wilson as an assistant coach July 16. Wilson, a three-time Olympian, had previously worked with the Buckeyes as a volunteer assistant coach for a combined five seasons, in two different stints, most recently during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.
• Senior Shachar Tal took home a bronze medal on both floor and rings July 15 at the 18th Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. The rising senior scored a 14.15 on floor and a 13.95 on rings to finish third on both events.
Women’s Hockey
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Natalie Spooner, a rising sophomore, has been invited to the Canadian National Under-22 Team Selection Camp. The forward is one of 42 players picked by Hockey Canada for the camp, Aug. 7-14 at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary.
• Lisa Chesson, a former defenseman for Ohio State from 2005-08, was invited to the 2009 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival, Aug. 18-24 in Blaine, Minn. The Buckeye is one of 41 players to participate in the Festival, which serves as the selection camp for the 2009-10 U.S. Women’s National Team.
Men’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Nick Myers
• Ohio State will host the third-annual “Showdown in the Shoe” in Ohio Stadium prior to the football team’s spring game. Set for April 24, 2010, the lacrosse Buckeyes will take on Air Force in an ECAC Lacrosse League matchup before the football team takes the field for its intrasquad game.
• Former Buckeye Anthony Kelly was part of the winning Old School team in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game, downing the Young Guns squad which included Buckeye alum Ricky Pages. The Old School team won the game 22-21 in overtime, July 16 at Invesco Field in Denver in front of 10,123 fans.
Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• Chuck Rodosky was named an assistant coach of the Ohio State rowing team head coach Andy Teitelbaum announced July 16. Rodosky returns to the Buckeye state after serving as the Scarlet and Gray’s volunteer assistant coach from 2003-05.
• Three Buckeyes were named to their respective countries’ Under-23 teams that will compete in the 2009 World Rowing Under-23 Championships July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic. Anniken Ellingsen, a rising junior will row for Norway and incoming freshman Regina Pieroth will compete for Germany. Former Buckeye Claudia Wurzel, who graduated this spring, will represent Italy.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Wadley and Vince Panzano
• Ohio State, runner-up at the Big Ten championships, had a remarkable season in the classroom as well. The team had the fourth-highest team grade point average (GPA) nationally during 2008-09 – 3.37 – and has earned the distinction of being a Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Team.
Synchronized Swimming
Head coach: Linda Lichter-Witter
• The 2009 U.S. National Team, led by Ohio State head coach Linda Lichter-Witter, finished seventh in the team technical routine July 19 in the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy. The U.S. team earned a 93.333, 5.5 points behind gold-medal winner Russia’s 98.833. Spain was second with a 97.833, while China rounded out the Top 3 (96.667).
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Ty Tucker, Ohio State head coach, announced the hiring of Jim Laitta as the Buckeyes’ assistant coach July 21. Laitta joins Ohio State after 19 years of head coaching experience of the men’s and women’s programs at Maryland.
