ATH: League-High 73 Buckeyes Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced the inaugural class of Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients Wednesday, with Ohio State leading the way with 73 honorees. The newly-established award is given to student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or above for the previous academic year (excluding summer school). Recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their institution.
Rowing ranked first for the Buckeyes with nine honorees, followed by the men’s swimming and diving team with seven. The women’s swimming and diving and the football teams each had six recipients, with the men’s gymnastics program garnering five awards. In all, 13 women’s teams, 11 men’s teams and one co-ed program had student-athletes recognized.
Nine Buckeyes excelled in the classroom, posting perfect 4.0 GPAs –Liz Derr (synchronized swimming), D.R. Ebner (football), Courtney Jenkins (women’s soccer), Chris Lowery (men’s lacrosse), Scott Marguglio (men’s soccer), Alyssa Meyer (women’s gymnastics), Sean Moore (men’s swimming and diving), Kim Reeder (softball) and Sarah Smith (fencing).
Ohio State also led the conference in Academic All-Big Ten selections, with 306 honorees, marking the sixth-consecutive year the Buckeyes ranked first.
