Former OSU wrestling star ready for fight

LAS VEGAS — Mark Coleman won an NCAA national wrestling championship at Ohio State, represented the U.S. wrestling team in the 1992 Summer Olympics, won the UFC’s first-ever heavyweight title, and earned an induction into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008.

Buckeye vows to be a big hit this fall

Brian Rolle was a star of the spring. For two years, the linebacker from Immokalee, Fla., stayed in the background at Ohio State, popping up with some big plays on special teams, but otherwise biding his time with veterans like James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman in front of him. A little undersized at 5-11, but with big-hit ability, it was hard to get a read on him as a person and a player. Here’s a read. This guy could be a star of the fall as well.

The IFAF Junior World Championship game didn’t get off to the kind of bang that Team USA was used to, but it didn’t really matter. The No. 2-seeded U.S. team, which had scored a combined 133 points in its first two tournament games, led No. 1 seed Canada 18-3 at halftime; it was the Americans’ smallest halftime lead in the tournament.

Incoming football freshman Storm Klein and Jack Mewhort will have some good “how did you spend your summer vacation” stories to share at the Woody Hays Center this fall. The two helped lead Team USA to victory in the first Junior World Championship last weekend in Canton. The team won three games over four days and featured routs over France and Mexico with a combined score of 133-0, before defeating Canada 41-3.

In his recent rundown of must-see games this season, colleague Bruce Feldman touched on the potential impact of the Ohio State-USC contest for the Buckeyes. It goes without saying that a home loss to the Trojans, especially one by double digits, would further damage Ohio State’s national reputation. But Feldman contends that even a victory might not be a major help to the Buckeyes’ cause.

The Ohio State Alumni Magazine conducted voting for a 100-year anniversary football team, and the coaching contest wasn’t close. Jim Tressel is a popular guy in Ohio, but he’s no Woody yet. Woody Hayes won the fan balloting 1,055 to 314 over Tressel. The rest of the team, which was open to players through the 2006-07 season (sorry Terrelle Pryor) includes five Buckeyes that played for Tressel – center Nick Mangold, linebacker A.J. Hawk, safety Mike Doss, defensive lineman Will Smith and kicker Mike Nugent.

As the needle on the scale rose, the odds of Jake Stoneburner playing receiver sank. The Dublin Coffman graduate came to Ohio State in the spring of 2008 determined to play receiver.
The lineup for Big Ten media days is set

You know football season isn’t too far away when the Big Ten releases the list of players who will be attending media days, to be held July 27 and July 28 in Chicago. The rundown includes 17 All-Big Ten selections, including nine first-team honorees from last year. Minnesota star wideout Eric Decker will speak on behalf of the players at the Big Ten kickoff luncheon on July 28. Of course, I’ll be making the short trip down Lake Shore Drive for all the action, so be sure to chain yourself to the blog during those days.

Safety Kurt Coleman, defensive tackle Doug Worthington and tight end Jake Ballard, all seniors, were announced today as the representatives for the Buckeyes at the Big Ten media days on July 27 and 28 in Chicago. And I’m guessing those will be three of your four captains for Ohio State in the fall. The guys who are trusted by Jim Tressel to sit in suits at round tables and field several hours of questions from reporters typically fare well in the team voting for the captain spots later in preseason camp. Since I started covering the team, seven of the nine players I’ve seen in Chicago have become captains.

Sarikopoulos’ injury a knee sprain

Greece continues to hold Zisis Sarikopoulos out of the FIBA under-19 world championships because of a left knee sprain, an Ohio State spokesman said today after assistant coach Alan Major returned from Auckland, New Zealand, where the tournament is being played. Sarikopoulos will be re-evaluated after the team returns to Greece this weekend. He is still hopeful of playing for his country in the under-20 European championships later this month.
