Sophomore Buckeyes set aside the morning to teach young girls the basics of their sport
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team continues to reach out to the local Columbus community, visiting Girls, Inc., Wednesday morning. The nonprofit organization that aims to cultivate confident, young girls had rising sophomores Kelli Barhorst and Sarah Mignin and rising junior Susan Halverson over to its Westerville location for a lesson in volleyball basics.
“As Ohio State student-athletes, it is important for us to continue building a strong relationship with the youth of our community,” Mignin said.
The three talented Buckeyes, including Ohio natives Barhorst and Mignin, taught beginning volleyball skills to a group of 10-15 girls before playing related games.
“It is the best feeling in the world to watch the kids grow in such a short period of time,” Halverson said. “We are honored to share these experiences with the youth in our community.”
“Giving back to the community gives us a sense of gratification we are making an impact in young adult’s lives,” Barhorst said.
The 2009 Buckeyes kick off their home schedule at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 vs. Bowling Green in St. John Arena as Ohio State plays host to the Sports Imports Classic. The Scarlet and Gray play twice the following day (Sept. 19), meeting Cleveland State at 11:30 a.m. before playing Xavier at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students (under 18) while 6 and under receive free admission.
