Athletics
Lenee’ Buchman, who has spent the last 12 years as cheerleading coach at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, was named Ohio State’s new spirit squad head coach June 18.
Twelve members will be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame the weekend of Sept. 25-26, the Men’s Varsity O Alumni Association and the Women’s Varsity O Alumnae Society announced June 23. The class will be officially inducted in two separate ceremonies Sept. 25 and introduced to the public at halftime of the Ohio State home football game against Illinois Sept. 26.
The 2009 class includes: Men – Neal Colzie (football), Robert Gary (cross country/track and field), Bob Hopper (swimming), Andy Katzenmoyer (football), Dick LeBeau (football), Michael Redd (basketball) and Pandel Savic (football); Women – Kaja Fiserova (rowing), Allison Hanna (golf), Vanessa Immordino (field hockey), Emma Laaksonen (ice hockey) and Jim Montrella (swimming coach).
Men’s Basketball
Head coach: Thad Matta
Evan Turner scored 16 points from off the bench but the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games Team (1-1) was defeated, 98-82, by host Serbia (2-0) in the 2009 Serbia International Invitational June 28 in Belgrade. Team USA bounced back with a 67-63 win over Russia June 29 with Turner recording eight rebounds. In the first game of the invitational, Turner played 11 minutes and scored seven points with four rebounds in the U.S.’s win over Canada, 85-80, June 27.
Turner was named to the official 12-member roster for the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games Team June 18. The U.S. Men will compete for a gold medal at the 2009 World University Games, July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.
B.J. Mullens, a 7-foot center, became the fifth Ohio State freshman to be selected in the opening round of the annual National Basketball Association Draft in the last three seasons when the Dallas Mavericks selected the Columbus, Ohio, native with the 24th pick June 25. He was then traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Women’s Basketball
Head coach: Jim Foster
Two-time USA Basketball gold medalist Jantel Lavender was named to the official 12-member roster for the 2009 USA Women’s World University Games Team June 22. The USA Women will compete for a gold medal at the 2009 World University Games, July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Football
Head coach: Jim Tressel
The Ohio State-Navy football game on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at Ohio Stadium will kick off at noon Eastern, the Big Ten Conference has announced. ESPN will televise that season opener, marking the first time since 1931 that a service academy team has played in the Horseshoe.
The Ohio State-Toledo football game on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Cleveland Browns Stadium will kick off at noon Eastern, Toledo officials announced June 24. ESPN-Plus will televise that contest on a regional basis; it will also be available on ESPN GamePlan.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
Members of the Ohio State squad opened their summer slate with strong performances. Recent Buckeye grad Vaughn Snyder competed in the 2009 U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage, while junior-to-be Bo Hoag won the Monroe Invitational with teammate Brad Wright in second by a stroke.
Men’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Nick Myers
Former Buckeyes Anthony Kelly (2000-03) and Ricky Pages (2005-08) have been selected to play in the eighth annual Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game, which will be held at 10 p.m. ET July 16th at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver and broadcast live on ESPN2. The Bud Light Skills Competition will be held at halftime; Kelly won the Hardest Shot contest at the event last year.
Women’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Sue Stimmel
The U.S. defeated Australia, 8-7, in the final game of the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup to win its sixth World Cup. Former Buckeye Regina Oliver collected 12 ground balls and posted 10 caused turnovers in seven games to make the All-World Team.
Women’s Soccer
Head coach: Lori Walker
The captains for the 2009 Ohio State women’s soccer team were selected by a vote of the team and leading the Buckeyes this year will be seniors Ashley Bowyer and Lauren Robertson and fourth-year junior Cassie Dickerson. Bowyer, from Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Dickerson, from Kalamazoo, Mich., will serve as captains for a second-consecutive season.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Wadley and Vince Panzano
Ohio State will be well represented with six individuals scheduled to compete at the 2009 Summer World University Games, which will be contested July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Junior diver Sean Moore, who will compete for Team USA, and five swimmers – junior Itai Chammah (Israel), senior George Markovic (Serbia), senior Niksa Roki (Croatia), senior Stefan Sigrist (Switzerland) and Matthias Sigrist (Switzerland), who completed his eligibility this season – will be competing in the event, which is in its 25th .
Women’s Swimming
Head coach: Bill Dorenkott
Collegeswimming.com released its rankings of the top recruiting classes in the nation and coach Bill Dorenkott’s initial class of recruits to Ohio State University was ranked as the second-best class in the Big Ten Conference and a Top 20 class overall at No. 19.
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
Four members of the 2008-09 Ohio State squad in Bryan Koniecko, Justin Kronauge, Matt Allare and Chase Buchanan were named to the 2009 USTA Summer Collegiate Team, administered by the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) June 23. The four are a part of the Top 24 of the nation’s top men’s and women’s collegiate tennis players in an elite training program for the top American collegiate student-athletes that began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA.
Men’s Track and Field
Head coach: Robert Gary
All-American Jeff See and other former Buckeyes concluded action at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 28 at Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore. See finished ninth in the finals of the men’s 1500m with a time of 3:45.87, nearly five seconds off his top time. Lopez Lomong, competing for Nike, came in first with a time of 3:41.68.
Former Buckeye All-American Dan Taylor, the 2009 USA Indoor Champion, finished second in the outdoor shot put with his toss of 21.21m. Taylor was edged by Nike’s Christian Cantwell’s winning throw of 21.82m.
Saturday saw former Buckeye All-American Brian Olinger finish 12th overall in the finals of the 3000m steeplechase with his time of 8:49.37. Dan Huling, who trained at Ohio State with head coach Robert Gary, came in second overall with his time of 8:32.86.
Men’s Volleyball
Head coach: Pete Hanson
Ohio State setter Steven Kehoe was named a second-team Volleyball Magazine All-American in the July issue of the magazine. Kehoe directed the Buckeyes to their third-consecutive Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular season championship, the MIVA Tournament Championship and a berth in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
Libero Mik Berzins teamed with his brother Kriss, a junior at Loyola-Chicago, to win the nine-team men’s volleyball title at the 56th Latvian Volleyball Championship, May 23-24. The championship sponsored by the American Latvian Association was held at Kalamazoo College. After pool play, a single elimination tournament completed play with the Berzins, representing Los Angeles, defeating Kalamazoo in the championship match. Berzins earned most valuable player honors.
Women’s Volleyball
Head coach: Geoff Carlston
Ohio State head coach Geoff Carlston’s 2009 recruiting class was ranked 20th in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com June 30. The Buckeyes are one of four Big Ten schools in the Top 20. The class features two members of the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 list for 2009. Emily Danks, a 6-foot, 1-inch right-side hitter from Round Rock, Texas, is ranked a PrepVolleyball.com Top 15 recruit. Amanda Peterson, a 6-foot setter from Glen Ellyn, Ill., is a Top 40 recruit for the Buckeyes.
