Athletes of the Week
• Samantha Cheverton, a junior on the women’s swimming team, won the 100 butterfly and was part of four relay wins to lead the No. 30 Buckeyes to victory at the 40-team Chesapeake Energy Elite Pro-Am last weekend in Oklahoma City, Okla.
• Bianca Alvarez, a sophomore on the women’s diving team, won the three-meter diving competition at the Duke Diving Invitational Dec. 16 in Durham, N.C. She posted a winning score of 326.98 points.
Athletics Good Stuff
Athletics
• With six NCAA championships completed, Ohio State currently sits tied for 18th in the 2009-10 Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. The Buckeyes have scored points in five of the six completed championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey.
Baseball
Head coach: Bob Todd
• Big Ten Conference, Huntington Park and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission announced Dec. 16 that Columbus, Ohio, will be home to the Big Ten Baseball Tournament for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons.
• Ohio State junior ace Alex Wimmers and junior catcher Dan Burkhart, the 2009 Big Ten Conference co-pitcher and player of the year, respectively, have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America (NCBWA) preseason All-America second team. Both players are from Cincinnati, Ohio, and played for Archbishop Moeller High School.
• Ohio State is ranked 24th nationally in the PING! Baseball Preseason Top 30 poll.
No. 18 Men’s Basketball (9-2)
Head coach: Thad Matta
• Ohio State improved to 9-2 overall with a 60-44 victory over Delaware State Dec. 20 at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes, ranked No. 18 nationally, have one more home non-conference game before breaking for the holidays. Cleveland State comes to town for an 8:30 p.m. game Dec. 22 before the Buckeyes take a few days off. Play resumes Dec. 31 at Wisconsin for the start of the Big Ten Conference schedule.
• The Buckeyes were led last week by Cleveland native David Lighty. He averaged 16 points in wins vs. Presbyterian College and Delaware State. He made 12-of-20 shots from the field to pace the Buckeyes while junior Evan Turner continues to recover from injury.
• Single game tickets for the Big Ten portion of the Ohio State men’s basketball schedule are on sale at OhioStateBuckeyes.com. Tickets start at $30 for reserved seats. Day-of-game tickets will be available for $10 at the Schottenstein Center ticket office.

No. 6 Women’s Basketball (12-1, 1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Foster
• After trailing 14-2 to open the game, Ohio State went on a 15-2 run to take its first lead, in an eventually 78-54 win vs. Texas A&M Dec. 20 in Value City Arena. Jantel Lavender and Samantha Prahalis led the squad with 23 and 16 points, respectively.
• Ohio State downed in-state foe Wright State, 84-43, Dec. 15 in Value City Arena. For the second game this season, all 12 Buckeyes scored at least a field goal. They last did it Nov. 28, 2009 vs. IUPUI at the Buckeye Classic in St. John Arena.
• Lavender led the Buckeyes with 18 points while Brittany Johnson added 14, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc.

Men’s and Women’s Diving
Head coach: Vince Panzano
• Sophomore Bianca Alvarez won the three-meter diving competition at the three-team Duke Diving Invitational Dec. 16 in Durham, N.C. She posted a winning score of 326.98 points. Senior Chelsea Davis was third on the three-meter with 310.45 points
• On the men’s side, Wes Wieser and Ryan Jefferson were second and third, respectively, on the one-meter springboard with 352.78 and 334.76 points, respectively.
No. 8/8 Football (10-2; 7-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Senior Kurt Coleman was named a first team All-American by the Sporting News Dec. 15. Coleman anchored the Big Ten’s best defense in 2009. He was a third-year starter at safety and was voted captain and team MVP by his teammates. He was third on the team with 64 tackles and has led team in interceptions the last two years, including five in 2009.

No. 7 Men’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Miles Avery
• Ohio State held the Scarlet and Gray Intrasquad in St. John Arena Dec. 16 with Team Gray winning four of the six events, including floor, pommel horse, high bar and parallel bars, while tying Team Scarlet on high bar. Gray won the intrasquad, 332.9-323.3.

Men’s Hockey (7-12-1, 5-8-1-1 CCHA)
Head coach: John Markell
• Former Buckeye Corey Elkins made his NHL debut Dec. 15 as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2. The Kings recalled the 6-3, 216-pound forward from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League Dec. 14. Elkins, 24, is currently Manchester’s co-leader with 19 points and eight goals (8-11=19). He also shares the team lead with three power-play goals. Elkins’ 19 points also is tied for eighth in the AHL among rookies, while his eight goals are tied for fifth.

Women’s Hockey (7-7-4; 6-6-2-0 WCHA)

• Lisa Chesson, a defenseman for Ohio State from 2005-08, was named to the U.S. Olympic Women’s Team, USA Hockey announced Dec. 17 in Bloomington, Minn. She is the first product of the Buckeye women’s hockey program to represent the United States at the Olympic Games and has been a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team the last two years.
• Former Buckeye All-American Tessa Bonhomme, a defenseman for Ohio State from 2004-08, was nominated to the Canadian National Women’s Team for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games Dec. 21. The team will be competing for its third-consecutive gold medal at the Olympics in Vancouver. Bonhomme will be the first Buckeye women’s hockey product to represent Canada in the Olympics.
• The equipment manager for the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team will be Jim Jeans, equipment manager for Ohio State. This is his first Olympics after serving as equipment manager for various U.S. Women’s National and Select Teams over the last three years. Jeans has been equipment manager for the Buckeyes since the 2005-06 season.

• Joel Dalgarno, who ended his Buckeye career in 2009 as the team’s all-time leading goal scorer in the program’s 60-year history with 126, was part of a blockbuster trade as he was sent, along with two other players, from Toronto to Washington in exchange for National Lacrosse League (NLL) veteran Colin Doyle.

• Doug Verhoff was named a third team All-America by College Soccer News and rookie Matt Lampson earned Soccer America All-Freshman Second Team honors.

No. 30 Women’s Swimming and Diving (2-0)

• Ohio State won the 40-team Chesapeake Energy Elite Pro-Am last weekend in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Buckeyes, who have climbed into the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America dual meet rankings for the first time this season, came away with five relay wins and six more individual wins in the Olympic Festival Pool on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College to secure the victory.
• Junior Samantha Cheverton, from Lachine, Quebec, swam to a win in the 100 butterfly and was part of four relay wins to lead the Buckeye efforts against collegiate swimmers as well as elite club team members from around the country.
• Junior Katelyn Brix, from Brentwood, Calif., took first in the 200 individual medley and senior Colleen Schweitzer, from Highland Park, Colo., won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.16. Freshman Emily Creran, from Haddonfield, N.J., swam to a victory in the 200 backstroke and another freshman, Shannon Draves, from Gilbertsville, Pa., picked up a win in the 200 butterfly and another in the 50 butterfly.

Men’s Volleyball
Head coach: Pete Hanson
• Ohio State was picked as the preseason favorite by a vote of the league coaches. The Buckeyes, three-time defending MIVA regular season champions and two-time defending MIVA tournament champions, edged Ball State by one vote.
• Three Buckeyes, Kevin Heine, Steven Kehoe and John Klanac, were named to the 10-player MIVA Preseason All-Conference Team.
