COLUMBUS, Ohio — Senior Kurt Coleman was named a first team All-American by the Sporting News Tuesday and a third team selection by Phil Steele.
Coleman anchored the Big Ten’s best defense in 2009. He was a third-year starter at safety and was voted captain and team MVP by his teammates. He was third on the team with 64 tackles and has led team in interceptions the last two years, including five in 2009 — one of which was an 89-yard return for a touchdown in the Wisconsin win, the fifth longest return in OSU history. Coleman also had a career-high 14 tackles against the Badgers and finished the regular season with a pair of interceptions in win at Michigan.
A first team all-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media, Coleman was the recipient of the Bill Willis (outstanding defensive player) and W.W. Hayes (Michigan game MVP) awards at the team banquet.
