COLUMBUS – Hey Buckeyes, the 2009 Buckeye – Wolverine Challenge for Life is on! This life- saving challenge is designed to motivate fans across the states of Ohio and Michigan to learn about the importance of registering as an organ and tissue donor – and to take action before Game Day.
Buckeyes for Life and The Ohio State University Students for Organ Donation chapter are asking all fans to help Ohio State beat “the team up north” off the field — and save lives — by placing their name in the Ohio Donor Registry. The Challenge ends on Thursday, November 19, 2009 and the winner will be announced at Big Game on November 21.
“This Challenge helps Buckeye fans realize the importance of registering their decision to become an organ, tissue and eye donor in the Ohio Donor Registry. Unlike the Challenge in previous years, only new registrants in the state of Ohio will count toward Ohio’s total. That means it is even more important for Buckeye fans who haven’t yet registered as donors, to register their decision today. Every new registration gives hope to an individual waiting for a life-saving organ transplant or a healing tissue transplant. What could be better than saving lives and beating Michigan?” said, Lauren Fitting, Lifeline of Ohio community outreach/partnership coordinator.
In 2006, The University of Michigan initiated the community-based, life-saving competition between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Michigan Wolverines to register the most organ and tissue donors before the annual Ohio State-Michigan football game. Ohio has won the competition each of the past three years, proving once again Ohio State has the best fans in the land.
Nearly 105,000 people nationwide are waiting for a life-saving transplant and nearly 3,000 of those people are living right here in Ohio. Everyday 18 people die waiting for an organ transplant. By registering a decision in the Ohio Donor Registry, an individual has the potential to save eight lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of 50 others through tissue donation.
Ohioans can participate by visiting www.lifelineofohio.org. Let’s continue the winning tradition! Register as a donor and become a Buckeye For Life!
