Athletes of the Week
• Cameron Heyward, a junior defensive end on the football team, produced a team-high and career-best 11 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a career-high two sacks, to help hold Penn State to a single touchdown in a 24-7 road victory Nov. 7. Heyward pushed the Nittany Lions’ offense back 17 yards with his three tackles for loss, including 13 yards on two sacks. His 11 defensive stops surpassed his previous career best of seven tackles.
The Georgia native spearheaded a Buckeyes defense that limited one of the conference’s top offenses to seven points, 76 rushing yards and 201 total offensive yards. PSU entered the game leading the Big Ten in conference games only with 423.4 total offensive yards per contest, while rating second in the conference with 26.8 points and 190.6 rushing yards per outing.
• David Tiemstra, a sophomore defender on the men’s soccer team, scored the lone goal of the game in the Buckeyes’ Big Ten title game win over Michigan, 1-0, Nov. 7 in Columbus. The win gave Ohio State (10-4-4, 4-2-0) its first outright Big Ten regular-season title and first No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Buckeyes begin conference tourney play at 2 p.m. Nov. 13 against the winner of Indiana vs. Wisconsin.
Tiemstra’s goal, his first of the season, came with two seconds remaining in the first half off a corner kick by Eric Shrigley.
• Kristen Dozier, a senior on the women’s volleyball team, had an outstanding game at the net against Wisconsin recording a match-high 11 total blocks with three solos and eight assist blocks. She participated in 11 of OSU’s season-high 16 blocks against the Badgers. Dozier posted a team-high 14 points adding seven kills (.467) and two digs. She was key in holding Wisconsin to a .123 attack percentage, including sub-.100 percentages in set one, .053 with four blocks and set three, .071 with five blocks. Her 11 blocks is a season-high and two shy of her career-high 13 set against Houston in 2006.
At Iowa, Dozer had three assist blocks, 11 kills (.318) and added two digs for her 12.5 points. In the two matches, she averaged 2.00 blocks, 3.79 points, 2.57 kills and .57 digs while hitting .378.
Athletics Good Stuff
Athletics
• Ohio State will be collecting non-perishable food donations at home events throughout the Nov. 13-15 weekend to give to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Collection boxes will be available on the concourse levels in St. John Arena for the women’s volleyball and basketball games, the OSU Ice Rink for the women’s hockey series and Value City Arena for the men’s hockey series and women’s basketball game.
Baseball
Head coach: Bob Todd
• Former Buckeye Nick Swisher will be getting a World Series championship ring. The sixth-year Major League Baseball veteran was the starter in left field for five of six games as the New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-games-to-2, to claim the 2009 World Series crown.
• Swisher is the fifth Buckeye to play in a World Series and is the first to play on a World Series champion since Joe Sparma (1962-63) was a member of the champion Detroit Tigers team of 1968. Frank Howard (1956-57) is the only other Buckeye to play for a world champion team.
No. 16 Men’s Basketball (1-0)
Head coach: Thad Matta
• The Buckeyes defeated Alcorn State, 100-60, in their season opener Nov. 9 at Value City Arena. Jon Diebler led the Ohio State effort with 22 points while William Buford added 19. Jeremie Simmons also recorded 12 points from off the bench for the Buckeyes as Ohio State reached 100 points for the first time since Nov. 10, 2006, when it defeated VMI 107-69.
• Junior guard Evan Turner had the second triple-double in Ohio State history against Alcorn State with 14 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. The only other triple-double was achieved by Dennis Hopson against Ohio University on Dec. 6, 1986. His 17 rebounds were the most since Shun Jenkins also had 17 against Penn State on Feb. 12, 2003.
• Turner led Ohio State with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists as the Buckeyes downed Walsh, 86-48, in an exhibition game Nov. 4 at Value City Arena. In all, 11 Buckeyes scored with Buford adding 15 points, David Lighty 11 and Simmons and Diebler 10 each.
• Ohio State begins the 2009-10 season at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 vs. Alcorn State at Value City Arena in the first game of the 2K Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. Ohio State is 5-0 in season openers under head coach Thad Matta, now in his sixth season directing the Buckeyes.

• Junior center Jantel Lavender was named to the Associated Press’ 2009-10 Preseason Women’s All-America basketball team Nov. 3. She is only the second women’s player at Ohio State to be named to the five-member preseason squad. Former Buckeye All-American Jessica Davenport was the first.
• Reigning Big Ten freshman of the year Samantha Prahalis also received consideration for the preseason squad.

• Despite a strong push late in the second half, No. 2-seeded Ohio State suffered a 2-1 loss to No. 7 Penn State Nov. 6 in the first round of the 2009 Big Ten Championship in East Lansing, Mich. The squad, 13-6 overall and 16th in the latest RPI, now awaits the 2009 NCAA Tournament selection show at 8 p.m. Nov. 10. The show will be broadcasted live online at NCAA.com.
• Berta Queralt was voted the Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches Nov. 5 at the 2009 Big Ten Tournament banquet in East Lansing, Mich. With the honor, Queralt becomes the fifth Ohio State student-athlete to receive a major conference distinction, all coming under 14th-year head coach Anne Wilkinson, and the fourth in as many seasons.
• In addition, Queralt has been selected a First Team All-Big Ten honoree along with senior goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani and sophomore midfielder Aisling Coyle while sophomore Maria Briones was named to the second-team. Queralt is the lone rookie to earn first-team honors this season and is the first in Buckeye history. Sophomore back Jenn Sciulli was named Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award winner.
• Ohio State’s three members on the first-team ties the program high first set in 1982 and then-reached the mark again in 2001 and ’06.
No. 10/8 Football (8-2; 5-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Terrelle Pryor threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Ohio State defeated No. 11 Penn State, 24-7, Nov. 7. The Buckeyes are now tied for first in the Big Ten with Iowa’s loss at Northwestern.
• Defensive end Cameron Heyward was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Nov. 8 after recording a game-high 11 tackles, including three for losses, and two quarterback sacks against the Nittany Lions. Heyward led an Ohio State defensive unit that allowed just 201 yards of total offense.
• Senior wide receiver and return man Ray Small earned the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honor after helping Ohio State win the battle for field position with seven punt returns for 130 yards, including a pair of returns over 40 yards to set up Buckeyes touchdowns in the victory at Penn State. The senior wide receiver averaged 18.6 yards per punt return and also added a seven-yard reception and a 13-yard reverse.
• Four members of the Ohio State football squad have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team for District 4. Named to the second team were offensive guard Bryant Browning, defensive tackle Todd Denlinger, offensive guard Andrew Moses and running back Marcus Williams.
• Senior safety Kurt Coleman has been named a nominee for the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service, with academic and athletic achievement.

Men’s Golf

• Redshirt-freshman Jamie Sindelar led Ohio State with a score of 2-under in the opening round of the Gilford Collegiate Championship at Corde Valle Nov. 10 in San Martin, Calif. The Buckeyes are tied for 11th out of the 14-team field with a team score of 368 (6-count-5) on the par 72, 7,169-yard course, matching Colorado and Oklahoma’s totals.
• The field has been set for the 35th annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic and it includes Ohio State junior Bo Hoag, a 2009 Honorable Mention All-America and First Team All-Big Ten selection. The tournament, which is hosted by the Sun Bowl Association, is slated for Nov. 22-24 at the par-71, 6,837-yard El Paso Country Club. In all, the field includes 32 All-Americans from the previous year, making it the largest field in the 35-year existence of the event. In 2005, 31 players competed in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic.

Women’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Carey Fagan
• Senior Hillary Dow was named captain of the 2010 Ohio State squad Nov. 2. Dow becomes the first solo-captain under head coach Carey Fagan after serving as a co-captain as a junior. A native of Yorktown, Va., Dow finished the 2009 season as one of the Buckeyes’ top all-arounders and floor performers.
Men’s Hockey (3-6-1, 2-3-1-1 CCHA)
Head coach: John Markell
• Ohio State split a series with Northern Michigan in Value City Arena over the weekend, with a 1-0 loss (Nov. 6) and 5-4 win (Nov. 7).
• Junior Sergio Somma’s goal with 1:32 left in regulation capped a 5-4 Buckeye comeback win over Northern Michigan Nov. 7 in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes trailed 2-0 after the first period and were down by one twice in the third but scored the final two goals of the game for the 5-4 victory. Ohio State had the only goals of the second to knot the score, with John Albert tallying unassisted at 10:57 to put the Buckeyes on the board and Peter Boyd scoring at 17:11. Zac Dalpe responded less than four minutes later to tie the game (4-4). The winner came at 17:28, as Somma, who had the primary assist on Dalpe’s goal, redirected a Shane Sims shot.
• Northern Michigan scored 22 seconds into the game Nov. 6 and it stood as the gamewinner, as Ohio State was shut out, 1-0, in Value City Arena. Buckeye goalie Dustin Carlson had a season-best 34 saves in a losing effort.

Women’s Hockey (5-4-3; 5-4-1-0 WCHA)

• Ohio State moved into second place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings after defeating North Dakota by a score of 3-1 Nov. 7 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The victory salvaged a split with the Fighting Sioux that put the Buckeyes between league-leader Minnesota (12 points) and Wisconsin (10 points) in the WCHA standings.
• The Buckeyes dropped a 5-4 decision to North Dakota Nov. 6. Ohio State rallied twice to tie the score, but fell short of regaining the lead they held in the opening minutes of the game. Senior co-captain Raelyn LaRocque led the Buckeyes with four points (2g, 2a) in the series.
• Hokey Langan was selected as the WCHA Rookie of the Week Nov. 4 after leading the Buckeyes to their first sweep of the season with six points on three goals and three assists against Minnesota State, Oct. 30-31 at the OSU Ice Rink.

• Ohio State moved to 3-0 on the season with wins over Purdue and Akron in a tri-match hosted by Purdue. In the open event, the Buckeyes scored 4,419 with Akron second at 3,913 and Purdue third at 2,256. OSU finished first in all three open events posting a 942 in free pistol (30 shots), a 2,029 in standard pistol (60 shots) and a 1,448 in air pistol (40 shots). In the women’s sport pistol (60 shots), the Buckeyes recorded a 1,631.
• Kelsey Imig won the standard and sport pistol events with scores of 542 and 553, respectively. She also posted firsts in three-gun aggregate (1,144) and two-gun aggregate (917). Buckeye Blake Reburn won free pistol with a 244 and air pistol with a 374.

Rifle (1-2)
Head coach: Pat Cherry
• Ohio State picked up a 4,577 to 4,562 victory at Morehead State Nov. 7. The Buckeyes defeated Morehead State in air rifle, 2,311 to 2,292 but fell, 2,270 to 2,266 in smallbore. Individual in smallbore rifle, Amanda Furrer took first with a 583. James Clark was third at 569. In air rifle, Furrer was second at 581 with Clark posting a 577 to tie for third. Furrer finished first with a 1,164 in the two-gun aggregate and Clark finished third at 1,146.
• The Buckeyes then fell at Kentucky, 4,650 to 4,614 Nov. 8. The Buckeyes fell one point short in smallbore rifle to the Wildcats, 2,295 to 2,294. Kentucky won the air rifle event by 35 points, 2,355 to 2,323. Furrer finished first in smallbore rifle with a 586 and fifth in air rifle at 587.

Men’s Soccer (10-4-4, 4-2-0 Big Ten)

• David Tiemstra scored in the 45th minute and Ohio State held on for a 1-0 win over Michigan to earn its first regular-season Big Ten Championship Nov. 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in front of season-high 1,081 fans.
• Fresh off winning the Big Ten regular-season Championship, members of the men’s soccer team swept the weekly conference awards Nov. 9. Tiemstra earned offensive player of the week recognition, while goalkeeper Matt Lampson garnered his third defensive player of the week nod.
• The Buckeyes earn the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament next week in Bloomington, Ind., and will face the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 seed game Nov. 13.

• Ohio State dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Michigan State Nov. 6 in East Lansing, Michigan, its first loss since Oct. 4 at Penn State. The Buckeyes close out the regular season at 14-3-2 overall, including a 7-2-1 Big Ten ledger good for second in the league.

Women’s Tennis

• Ohio State wrapped up its fall season with three Buckeyes competing at the ASU Thunderbird Invitation in Tempe, Ariz. Senior Christina Keesey led the way with a 3-1 record. Junior Paloma Escobedo and freshman Kara Cecil also played in the tournament, each going 1-3.
Women’s Volleyball (20-7, 8-6 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• The Buckeyes reach 20 wins for the first time since 2006. The eight Big Ten victories are the most since 2006.
• Ohio State won road matches at Iowa Nov. 6 and Wisconsin Nov. 7. In the 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17) win at Iowa, Katie Dull posted a match-high 22.5 points with match-highs of 18 kills (.308) and three ace serves. She added one solo block, one assist block and 11 digs against the Hawkeyes. Her fourth kill of the match gave her 1,000 career kills, finishing the weekend with 1,025. Kristen Dozier added 12.5 points with 11 kills (.318), three assist blocks and two digs.
• Dozier collected a match-high 11 blocks against Wisconsin with three solo blocks and eight assists. She added seven kills (.467) and two digs against the Badgers. Dull contributed 12.5 points with a team-high 11 kills (.320), five digs, a solo block and one assist block. Kelli Barhorst and Anna Szerszen added 11 points each with Barhorst having nine kills (.471), one ace serve and two assist blocks. Szerszen contributed seven kills (.217), one digs, one solo block and six assist blocks.
• Dull with 18 and 11 kills this weekend has now recorded double-figure kills in the last 25 matches and her 18 kills and 11 digs was her 10th double-double (kills-digs) of the season.
• Chelsea Noble, a senior libero, has been named a third-team selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV squad. She received second-team honors last season. Noble has started every match this season at libero and is averaging a team-high 3.75 digs per set and has a .953 serve reception percentage for the Buckeyes who have an 18-7 overall record and are 6-6 in the Big Ten.

• Behind three champions and a runner-up finish, Ohio State had a strong outing in its first action of 2009-10 at the Eastern Michigan Open at Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti, Mich., Sunday.
• Freshmen Mike Fee (149) and Peter Capone (174) won their first events as college competitors. Sophomore Johnny Hiles (HWT) also secured a championship to start the season on a high note. Meanwhile, sophomore Tony Jameson was the runner-up at 157 pounds. All four competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
• In the Open Division, junior Nikko Triggas was the lone Buckeye to place as he finished sixth at 125 pounds.
