Columbus takes its place among the elite at No. 34 out of 399 in Sporting News’ annual Best Sports Cities rankings. Pittsburgh-which reclaimed its title of “City of Champions” with the Penguins and Steelers-is No. 1. Boston, last year’s No. 1 city, slips to No. 3.
“Columbus is one of the few cities that you can come to and you’ll believe there’s a professional (football) team here,” Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman told Sporting News. “Everybody bleeds scarlet and gray. You can come out to game day, and you’ll really become a Buckeye fan. You can go anywhere else, and they don’t have fans like we do. … It’s just a great city.”
This year’s Best Sports Cities list features almost 400 cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada, ranked by a system that assigns points to a variety of categories, including a city’s number of teams, their regular-season won-lost records, playoff berths, bowl appearances and tournament bids, championships, applicable power ratings, fan fervor, attendance and more.

Ohio State Buckeyes’ defense tough, but ’96 squad set defensive benchmark
Cleveland Plain Dealer
October 3, 2009
When 13 years later you remember and regret the shutouts that should have been as much as the ones that happened, you were part of a great defense. Though Ohio State’s 1996 defense did shut out three opponents in 12 games, former linebacker Greg Bellisari recalls the one that got away, a 38-7 win over Penn State when the Nittany Lions were dominated before scoring on Ohio State’s second team in the fourth quarter.

Saine shows speed and power gaining 113 yards
Cleveland Plain Dealer
October 3, 2009
The autopsy in the big games has usually revealed that it was speed that killed the Ohio State Buckeyes. It is the quality that came out of the South like a heat wave and just sort of nuked the Buckeyes in those national championship games a few years ago. It is something the Buckeyes are getting a handle on at last.

Defense adjusts to Coleman’s absence
The Columbus Dispatch
October 4, 2009
Ohio State had no choice but to proceed without suspended safety Kurt Coleman last night against Indiana. Anderson Russell took Coleman’s spot in the lineup next to safety Jermale Hines, and Orhian Johnson took Russell’s role as the fifth defensive back in the nickel defense. But Coleman was missed.

Kicking is strong for OSU, Indiana
The Columbus Dispatch
October 4, 2009
Last night’s game in Memorial Stadium matched the top two scorers in the Big Ten, and they happened to be kickers: Indiana freshman Nick Freeland and Ohio State senior Aaron Pettrey. Freeland went in averaging 9.8 points, Pettrey 9.5. “But you’re only as good as your next kick,” said Pettrey, who went in boasting of 9-of-10 accuracy on field-goal attempts; Freeland was 9 of 12.

OSU’s Larimore carted off the field in homecoming
Cleveland Plain Dealer
October 4, 2009
Ohio State defensive tackle Dexter Larimore goes down. The only Buckeye on the roster from Indiana, the junior has proven to be a great out-of-state steal for the Buckeyes as he has held down the middle of the defensive line and helped make their 3-4 defensive look so effective. Larimore is helped off the field, putting no pressure on his right leg, and then he has an icepack placed on his right knee on the sideline.
