COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior defensive end Thaddeus Gibson was honored as the Big Ten conference co-defensive player of the week for his outstanding performance in the 38-7 win over Minnesota Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Gibson recorded a career-high three sacks (for -13 yards) in the victory, just one shy of the OSU single-game record and the fifth-best effort in Buckeye history. The native of Euclid, Ohio, also recovered a Gopher fumble and had six tackles in the contest.
“That’s great news and a great honor,” Gibson said. “We were really happy to get the win over Minnesota and keep our team in the hunt for the Big Ten championship. I am happy for the Buckeyes to get this recognition.”
Gibson shared defensive honors with Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn. Penn State quarterback Darryl Clark was selected as offensive player of the week, while Northwestern kicker/punter Stefan Demos was the special teams player of the week.
Gibson is the second Buckeye to earn player of the week recognition this season; linebacker Ross Homan was honored against Wisconsin. The Buckeyes (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten), ranked No.15 nationally, host non-conference foe New Mexico State (3-5, 1-3 WAC) Saturday at noon in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
