Athletes of the Week
• Junior linebacker Ross Homan racked up a career-high 15 tackles while adding two sacks, a pass breakup and a forced fumble to help the football hold the Badgers’ offense to a pair of field goals and remain atop the Big Ten standings.
Homan spearheaded a defensive attack that held the Big Ten’s top-ranked scoring and rushing offense to a pair of field goals and 118 yards on the ground. The Badgers entered the game averaging 35.0 points and 217.2 rushing yards per contest. Homan collects weekly laurels for the first time in his career, marking Ohio State’s first defensive honoree since Vernon Gholston was named player of the week on Nov. 19, 2007.
• Junior midfielder Lauren Steuer scored the gamewinner in 54th minute of the women’s soccer team’s 3-2 win over Iowa Oct. 9. It marked Steuer’s first career goal. The Cincinnati native also had the assist on the game-winner with 49 seconds to play in the Buckeyes’ 1-0 win over Northwestern Oct. 11. Steuer is tied for tops on the team with four assists in 2009.

Athletics
• Martin Jarmond was named the Ohio State associate athletics director for development. Jarmond was most recently the assistant athletic director of development/director of regional gifts at Michigan State University.
Baseball
Head coach: Bob Todd
• Ohio State’s Scarlet team opened the 2009 Scarlet and Gray World Series with a 7-0 win over the Gray Oct. 9 behind solid pitching from freshman starter Brett McKinney and a 16-hit attack with catcher Dan Burkhart leading the way with four hits, three runs and two RBI.
• Clutch hitting and a strong performance by starter Drew Rucinski pushed Gray past Scarlet, 5-2, Oct. 12 at Bill Davis Stadium, tying the Scarlet and Gray World Series at one win apiece. A deciding Game 3 will be played Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Men’s Basketball
Head coach: Thad Matta
• Ohio State men’s basketball team begins practice for the 2009-10 season Friday. The Buckeyes play Walsh University at 8 p.m. Nov. 4 in an exhibition contest before the regular-season opener Nov. 9 vs. Alcorn State in the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer.
Men’s and Women’s Diving
Head coach: Vince Panzano
• Head diving coach Vince Panzano was honored by his peers, earning the Coach Award of Excellence from USA Diving. Panzano, preparing for his 32nd season as Ohio State coach, was selected for the honor after junior Katie Bell captured a national championship on platform – the 23rd USA Diving national champion for Panzano.
No. 20 Field Hockey (9-4; 2-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• Powered by a team effort on the forward line, Ohio State snapped Miami’s seven-game win streak, posting a 5-2 victory over the RedHawks Oct. 7 in Oxford, Ohio.
• Sophomore Maria Briones led the Buckeyes on a goal and an assist as Ohio State downed Iowa, 2-0, Oct. 11. The win also marked goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani’s 37th career victory. She now leads the category in OSU all-time record book, passing former record-holder Lindsay Williams (2002-05).
Briones and Berta Queralt, both natives of Barcelona, Spain, paired to give Ohio State a 2-0 victory over reigning Big Ten tournament champion Iowa Oct. 11 and each scored in a 5-2 road victory over Miami Oct. 7 to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors Oct. 12.

• Ohio State got 21 points from its defense and special teams to knock off previously unbeaten and 24th-ranked Wisconsin, 31-13, Oct. 10 in front of 105,301 fans at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State is now in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 3-0 record.

Men’s Golf

• Ohio State finished second at the fourth-annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind. The Buckeyes took second in the 15-team field with a score of 874 (+34) just four strokes behind winner and event host Notre Dame.
• Sophomore Dan Charen led the squad, finishing in a tie for second after firing scores of 70-72-70 in his first collegiate event.

• Quinnipiac broke a 1-all tie 7:51 into the third period and added an empty netter as the Bobcats downed Ohio State, 3-1, Oct. 9 in Value City Arena. Quinnipiac earned the sweep after a 4-2 win in the opener Oct. 8.

Women’s Hockey (0-2-2; 0-2-0 WCHA)
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Ohio State cut No. 2 Minnesota’s lead to 1-goal four times, but fell just short with a 6-5 loss Oct. 9 in the Buckeyes’ home and WCHA opener. Nine Buckeyes recorded a point and five had multiple-point games, led by sophomore forward Natalie Spooner with three assists. Sophomore defenseman Kelly Wild scored twice, while Melissa Feste, Hokey Langan had a goal and assist and Kim Theut had two assists.
• The Buckeyes fell to the Golden Gophers by a score of 6-1 Oct. 10 in the second game of the series at the OSU Ice Rink. Spooner tallied for Ohio State to end the series with a goal and three assists.

No. 15 Men’s Soccer (7-2-3; 1-1-0 Big Ten)

• Austin McAnena and Doug Verhoff both scored first-half goals to lead Ohio State to a 2-0 victory over Cleveland State Oct. 9 at a rain-soaked Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
• Joshua Breto scored the lone goal of the game in the ninth minute to lead the Buckeyes over Oakland, 1-0, Oct. 7 in Rochester, Mich.
• Matt Lampson earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, Oct. 12. Lampson and the Buckeyes tallied shutout wins against a pair of nonconference opponents, Oakland and Cleveland State, last week.

No. 25 Women’s Soccer (10-2-1; 3-1-0 Big Ten)

• Lauren Granberg headed in the game-winner with 49 seconds remaining off a corner from Lauren Steuer to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 victory over Northwestern Oct. 11 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
• Ohio State battled the weather and the Iowa Hawkeyes, coming away with the 3-2 victory Oct. 10 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Senior captain Ashley Bowyer notched two goals while Lauren Steuer knocked in the gamewinner.
• With the two wins, Ohio State is just one-half game out of first place in the Big Ten standings. The team’s 10 wins are tied for most in the league.

Synchronized Swimming
Head coach: Linda Lichter-Witter
• Ohio State head coach Linda Lichter-Witter was named 2009 United States Synchronized Swimming Coach of the Year at the 2009 United States Aquatic Sports banquet in Rosemont, Ill.
• Senior Barbara Nesbitt also received high honors when she was named 2009 USA Synchro Athlete of the Year. The Riverside, Calif., native earned multiple first-place solo finishes including capturing the top spot at the 2009 U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Championships with a mark of 93.750.
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Five Buckeyes finished play at the 2009 D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships Oct. 10 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Senior Justin Kronauge was the lone Buckeye to make it to the second round in the singles main draw, while Ohio State duo Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles.
Women’s Tennis
Head Coach: Chuck Merzbacher
• The 2009-10 season continued for the Ohio State women’s tennis team in Lexington, Ky., at the Kentucky Invitational over the weekend. Freshman Fidan Manashirova highlighted the Buckeyes’ tournament, winning the Flight C title with four wins, all coming in three sets victories. Classmate Gabby Steele advanced to the Flight B final, but was defeated in three sets in the championship match.
Women’s Volleyball (14-5; 2-4 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Ohio State lost two matches last week to teams ranked in the top-five. The Buckeyes lost 3-1 to top-ranked Penn State Oct. 7, giving the Nittany Lions only their second set loss of the season. Kristen Dozier had 12 points and Katie Dull, 10.5 in the loss. Chelsea Noble tied for the match-high with 13 digs.
• Ohio State dropped a 3-1 decision at fifth-ranked Minnesota Oct. 9. Dull posted a team-high 23 points with Kelli Barhorst adding 10.5. Noble recorded a match-high 20 digs with Dull adding 13 for her fifth double-double of the season.
