Athletes of the Week
Bo Hoag, a sophomore on the men’s golf team, opened the fall season with a career-high finish at the William H. Tucker Invitational, Sept. 26-27 in Albuquerque, N.M. The sophomore from Upper Arlington, Ohio, battled at the top of the leaderboard throughout the third and final round, placing fourth at 3-under 213 with rounds of 70-69-74 on the par 72 course. He was just two strokes back from the tournament co-medalists. During his second round, Hoag, teeing off on No. 11, made par on his first seven holes and capped it off with an eagle on No. 18.
Lauren Robertson, a junior goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team from Mission Viejo, Calif., was named the Big Ten Conference co-Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 29 for her efforts in two Buckeye wins last week that extended the team’s winning streak to four-consecutive games.
Robertson totaled nine saves in the two wins last week 2-0 over Wright State and 1-0 over Indiana in the team’s Big Ten Conference opener to move into third place all-time at Ohio State with 14 career shutouts. Robertson made five saves against Wright State and followed that with a terrific four-save effort in the win over the Hoosiers.
Athletics Good Stuff
Men’s Cross Country
Head Coach: Robert Gary
After a few weeks off, Ohio State finished 13th in a field of 25 teams at the Roy Griak Invitational’s 8K Men’s Gold Race at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
The Buckeyes were led by redshirt freshman standout Taylor Williams, who has finished first for Ohio State in every race this season. Williams placed 25th overall in a time of 25:01 and finished second amongst all freshmen competing at the meet. The second Buckeye to cross the finish line was junior Christopher Olinger, who placed 47th with a time of 25:19.

Women’s Cross Country
Head Coach: Karen Dennis
Sophomore Sarah Foster, running in her first meet of the 2008 season, led the Buckeyes Oct. 28 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Foster placed 37th overall out of more than 275 runners in a time of 22:30 in the 6K event. Ellen Birmingham placed 106th in a time of 23:28 followed closely by Emily Thompson who was 110th in a time of 23:32. The Buckeyes were 20th out of the 33 teams.

Field Hockey (7-5; 0-2 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Anne Wilkinson
The 16th-ranked Buckeyes fell to No. 10 Michigan State by a score of 3-1 Oct. 26 in the Big Ten opener at North Turf Field. Senior midfielder Linda Haussener scored the Buckeye goal to extend her point streak to 10 games. Ohio State then dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 13 Penn State Sept. 28 on the Big Ten Network. The 1-0 shutout was the first time the Buckeyes have been held scoreless all season.

Football (4-1; 1-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Jim Tressel
Three-time defending Big Ten Conference champion Ohio State opened defense of its Big Ten crowns with a 34-21 win over previously unbeaten Minnesota Oct. 28 before 105,175 fans at Ohio Stadium.
Led by the return of Chris Wells and Terrelle Pryor, the Buckeyes rolled to a season-high 279 rushing yards, and 414 total yards. The Buckeyes improved to 4-1 with the win.
Wells rushed for 80 first-half yards and 106 total yards to lead the rushing attack. Pryor, making his second-consecutive start, scored two touchdowns finished with 97 yards rushing off eight carries (12.1 yards per carry average).
Ohio State seniors Brian Robiskie, James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman were selected as candidates for the inaugural Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in football Sept. 29. The group of 30 NCAA Division I student-athletes chosen as candidates for the award are seniors whom have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, character, community and competition.

Men’s Golf
Head Coach: Jim Brown
Three Buckeyes placed in the Top 20, led by sophomore Bo Hoag in fourth, as Ohio State finished fifth with a score of 7-over 871 at the 54th annual William H. Tucker Invitational Sept. 29 to open its fall schedule in Albuquerque, N.M.
Redshirt-junior Brad Wright tied for 14th in his first tournament as a Buckeye. The Cambridge, Ohio, native opened the event with a round of 67 and finished with a total of 3-over 219.
Senior Vaughn Snyder struggled on the front nine of his third round at 6-over, but battled back on the last nine holes at 4-under with five birdies and a bogey. The Massillon, Ohio, native’s 74 moved him to a tie for 20th at 221. Michael Kinkopf, the true freshman from Hilliard, Ohio, finished just one stroke back with a total of 222 to tie for 24th. Rounding out the Buckeyes was Patrick Simard who had two birdies and an eagle on his last four holes to climb back to a tie for 29th with a total of 224.

Women’s Golf
Head Coach: Therese Hession
Senior Gemma Webster and junior Emma Jandel were selected as the 2008-09 captains for Ohio State Sept. 22. This is the third-consecutive year Webster has received the honor and the first for Jandel.

Men’s Hockey
Head Coach: John Markell
Senior Zach Pelletier and sophomore Peter Boyd will serve as captains for the Ohio State men’s hockey team in 2008-09, Buckeye head coach John Markell announced Sept. 26.
The Buckeyes open the 2008-09 campaign with an exhibition vs. York at 2:05 p.m. Oct. 4 in the OSU Ice Rink. The regular-season begins with a home-and-home series vs. Miami. The Buckeyes and RedHawks will face off in Value City Arena in Columbus at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 10 before a game at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 11 in Oxford, Ohio.

Women’s Hockey
Head Coach: Jackie Barto
Ohio State prepared for its upcoming 2008-09 season with an exhibition game against Wilfrid Laurier Sept. 26 at the OSU Ice Rink and fell by a score of 2-1 to the Golden Hawks.
After trailing by a goal, the Buckeyes evened the score a 1-all at 17:10 of the first period when senior Hayley Klassen tipped in a goal off a shot by sophomore Shannon Reilly from the point. Freshman Brittany Carlson had the other assist on the goal.
In the OSU net, sophomore Deidre Facklis played the first 29:50 of the game and made 10 saves with two goals allowed. Senior Liana Bonanno played 29:19 and stopped all five shots faced.
Senior forwards Morgan Marziali and Klassen were named captains and senior goaltender Bonanno was named the assistant captain for the 2008-09 season.
The Buckeyes open their 10th season of women’s hockey this weekend with a two-game nonconference series at ninth-ranked Providence.

Men’s Lacrosse

Head coach Nick Myers and the Buckeyes welcome former Ohio State lacrosse alums to Columbus this weekend for the program’s annual alumni game at 5 p.m. Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Admission for the game is free.
Rowing
Head Coach: Andy Teitelbaum
Cleonice Renzetti and Zuzanna Trzcinska competed at the 2008 European Rowing Championships in Athens, Greece. Rowing on the Schinias Olympic Regatta Course, Renzetti sat in the one seat and helped the Italian Women’s Eight to a fourth-place finish in the A Final with a time of 6:25.75. Trzcinska and the Polish crew pulled up to the finish line in 6:26.00.
Men’s Soccer (5-2-1; 1-1-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: John Bluem
The 16th-ranked Buckeyes fell to No. 7 Northwestern, 1-0, Sept. 27 in Evanston, Ill. With the loss, Ohio State falls to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State returns to action Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. against Bowling Green at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Women’s Soccer (4-4-2; 1-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State picked up its fourth-consecutive win Sept. 28 with a 1-0 win over Indiana on the Big Ten Network. Courtney Jenkins scored the gamewinner in 78th minute of play with the assist credited to freshman Paige Maxwell. Lauren Robertson recorded her 14th-career shutout to lead the team’s effort. After opening the season 0-4-2, the Buckeyes have improved their record to 4-4-2.
Earlier in the week, the Scarlet and Gray recorded a 2-0 victory over Wright State Sept. 24 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Lisa Collison and Ali Schwach scored for the Buckeyes.

Softball

Ohio State opened its fall schedule at the Kent State Fall Invitational Sat. 28 with wins vs. Kent State and Bowling Green.
Paced by Whitney Cooper’s seven RBIs, the Ohio State softball team defeated Kent State, 5-2, and Bowling Green, 10-3, Sunday afternoon at the Kent State Fall Invitational in Kent, Ohio. The Buckeyes are 2-0 through the start of their fall season.
Kim Reeder went the distance against Kent State, striking out 12 and giving up just four hits. After surrendering a hit to the first batter of the day, she struck out seven-consecutive Golden Flash players before giving up four hits and two runs in the sixth inning. In the batter’s box, Tory Haddad went 2-4 with a RBI, while Brittany Goodchild was 2-2 and scored a run. Cooper tallied her first RBI of the day in the fifth inning following a triple by Rachel Shepherd.
Cooper found her groove against Bowling Green, tallying two homeruns and batting in six runs. Shepherd also accounted for two runs vs. the Falcons after being walked 3-of-4 at bats. Megan Miller started the day on the mound, pitching five innings before handing the ball off to Lindsay Bodeker. Bodeker gave up two hits and a run, but struck out the side in the seventh.

Women’s Tennis

Junior Kristen Flower will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the 2008 Riviera/All-American Championships Sept. 30-Oct. 5. The All-American features the best collegiate tennis players nationwide in a single elimination style tournament. Flower, who transferred to Ohio State this summer from Georgia Tech, will be making her Buckeye debut Tuesday in the qualifying draw of the tournament.
Women’s Volleyball (9-5; 0-2 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Geoff Carlston
Ohio State lost, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20), to No. 21 Michigan (13-0, 1-0) Sept. 24 in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The contest, in St. John Arena, was played in front of 2,171 fans.
Buckeye Anna Szerszen scored a match-high 15.5 points with Kristen Dozier adding 10. Szerszen had a team-high 10 kills, one ace serve, three solo blocks and three assists. Dozier posted eight kills, a solo block and two assists.
Ohio State (9-5 overall, 0-2 Big Ten), lost a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) decision to Michigan State (9-3, 1-0) in the Breslin Center on the Michigan State Campus.
Szerszen scored a match-high 19.5 points in the loss with Dozier adding 13.5. Szerszen had a match-high 18 kills and three assist blocks with Dozier adding nine kills, three solo blocks and three assists.
Ohio State continues on the road next week when they play at Northwestern Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. EDT and at No. 18 Wisconsin Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. EDT.
