DH RECORD CROWD SUNDAY
We knew the crowd Sunday against Louisville was going to be large; just not this large. Once the official attendance figures were released, we learned the official paid crowd was 3,186 fans. That is a new double-header attendance record for Ohio State women’s and men’s soccer. Following the women’s come-from-behind win over Louisville, the men defeated Michigan State, 1-0. Way to go Buckeye fans and great work by the Ohio State Marketing Dept.
THE BUCKEYE vs. RAIDER SERIES
Ohio State holds a 9-2 edge in wins over Wright State, including a 3-0 win last year at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes have won six consecutive in the series since a 2-1 Raider win in 1998. Coach Lori Walker’s teams are 7-1 vs. Wright State. Wright State was Ohio State’s first opponent in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, back on Aug. 29, 1999 (a 3-0 Ohio State win). Since then, Wright State has come back to Columbus three times to play (Ohio State wins in 2001, 2006 and 2007).
BUCKEYES BREAK THROUGH
The Buckeyes, starting eight freshmen and sophomores, broke through in the win column decisively this past weekend with two wins: 3-1 over Evansville and 2-1 in OT vs. Louisville. Some notes from the weekend:
Ohio State came back from a 1-0 deficit on the strength of two stunning goals to defeat Louisville. Lisa Collison set up the tying goal in the 82nd minute, a header by freshman Taylor Moront. Collison then scored the game winner in the 98th minute, off an assist from Ashley Bowyer.
Not even two minutes into the Evansville game Emily Esbrook passed to Genna Brand who sent a cross into the box that Paige Maxwell slammed home for the first of Ohio State’s goals.
It was the first of two Esbrook assists vs. UE.
Collison followed with another unstoppable drive and Taylor Moront capped the scoring with a goal in the second half.
COLLISON IS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lisa Collison was named the Big Ten Conference offensive player of the week for her five-point weekend.
1. Lisa 2. Lisa 3. Lisa
Collison passed Lisa Suttmiller (30 goals from 1994-97) this weekend to move into sole possession of second place with 31 career goals. Only Lisa Grubb (35 from 2001-06) has scored more.
GO BUCKS!
Taylor Moront has a three-game goal-scoring streak. She has goals vs. Duke and Evansville in addition to her awesome tying goal vs. Louisville.
Ashley Bowyer has a team-high four assists along with two goals.
Ten of the players who have played in all eight games are freshman and sophomores.
Ohio State has scored in all eight games.
THIS IS WRIGHT STATE
Wright State improved to 5-4 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Duquesne Sunday. Amber Kasmer netted two goals and goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson posted her tenth career shutout. The Raiders, coached by Pat Ferguson, reeled off four consecutive wins at one point this season before losing three OT matches to Alabama-Birmingham, Alabama and Dayton. Jess Rooma (four goals and 11 points) and Amber Kasmer (four goals and nine points) lead the Raiders.
