Athletics Good Stuff – Ohio State Buckeyes

Athletes of the Week
Kaila Calhoun, a sophomore on the women’s volleyball team, averaged team-high 4.29 digs per game for the two West Coast matches last week and handled 39 reception attempts without an error. She had 14 kills and hit .345 at Loyola Marymount adding two assists, an ace serve and two assist blocks. She had a match-high 18 digs against the Lions and handled 18 reception attempts without an error. At USC, Calhoun posted a match-high 12 digs and handled 21 reception attempts without an error. She added five kill, two assists and one assist block.
Calhoun has produced double-figure digs in her last five matches and six overall. She has had double-figure kills in five matches this season. On the season, Calhoun has a team-high 3.44 digs per game average and has a .982 reception percentage with two errors in 111 attempts. Calhoun is averaging 3.56 points, 2.97 kills and .69 blocks per game.
Senior midfielder Linda Haussener scored her third-career hat trick Sept. 14 as the 15th-ranked field hockey team defeated Maine, 4-0, at the Sheraton Catamount Field Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt. In addition to her three first-half goals vs. Maine, the co-captain also recorded an assist in the Buckeyes’ contest vs. Vermont Saturday. For her efforts over the weekend, Haussener was named to the classic’s all-tournament team.
Athletics Good Stuff
Alissa Clendenen joined the Athletics Communications staff as an assistant director, Dan Wallenberg, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications, announced Sept. 8. Clendenen comes to Ohio State from the University of Connecticut, also previously working at Duke and the University of Maryland. Clendenen will be the media relations contact for Buckeye men’s soccer, softball, women’s gymnastics and fencing.
Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Chris Neal
Ohio State finished fifth Sept. 13 at the Mel Brodt Invitational on the campus of Bowling Green State University. Sophomore Ellen Birmingham led the way once again for the Buckeyes, finishing 18th in a time of 19:15.48 in the 5K race. Freshman Sarah Lowe and junior Emily Thompson finished 21st and 22nd, respectively. Rounding out the top finishers for Ohio State were freshman Sara Klinvex (28th, 19:51.03) and sophomore Ashley Chirco (29th, 19:53.42).

In front of a L.A. Memorial Coliseum crowd of 93,458, Ohio State dropped a 35-3 decision to No. 1-ranked Southern California Sept. 13.
Senior Ryan Pretorius put the Buckeyes on the board first with a 29-yard FG with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter. The senior kicker is 7-of-9 on field goal attempts this season.

Men’s Golf
Head coach: Jim Brown
Junior Patrick Simard fired a round of 59 Sept. 10 on The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Gray Course, setting the course record on the par 70, 5,800-yard course. Simard carded two eagles on Nos. 8 and 12 along with nine birdies, including three on par-3s and six on par-4s. He had two bogies, on Nos. 6 and 16. The previous Gray Course record was 60. Simard, a native of Marbella, Spain, posted the low-round for the Buckeyes last season with a 65. He finished second on the team in stroke average last season with a 73.37.
Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
Ohio State departed for a week-long trip to Scotland Sept. 12. Head coach Therese Hession has the Buckeyes fully scheduled during their week in the birthplace of golf, playing seven different courses throughout the country including Kingsbarns Golf Links, Scotscraig Golf Club, St. Andrews-New Course, Turnberry Resort and Gleneagles Resort.
No. 15 Field Hockey (5-2; 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
Facing No. 13 Louisville on the road, Ohio State dropped its first game of the season with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals Sept. 10.
Freshman Jenn Sciulli scored a goal off a penalty shot attempt by senior Linda Haussener who was credited with the assist.
Participating in the Sheraton Catamount Field Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt., the Buckeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to Vermont. The Catamounts scored the gamewinning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the game.
Ohio State owned a 2-1 lead early in the second half before Vermont tied the score. Haussener fed senior Emily Mikac the ball which she tapped into the back of the cage. Junior Melissa Palm got the Scarlet and Gray on the board in the first half when she deflected in a shot by redshirt-freshman Aisling Coyle.
Haussener scored three goals in the first half as the Scarlet and Gray defeated Maine by a 4-0 score Sept. 14 in its second game of the Sheraton Catamount Field Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt. Junior Lindsay Quintiliani recorded her third shutout of the season as the Buckeyes improved to 5-2 overall.

Women’s Hockey

Former Buckeye Tessa Bonhomme and current freshman Natalie Spooner have been invited to attend the Canadian National Women’s Team Evaluation Camp, Hockey Canada announced Sept. 9. The two Buckeyes are among 41 players attending the camp that will be held Sept. 17-21 in Calgary. The camp will be used to determine which athletes will be part of the group that will work towards the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship and Olympic centralization. In February 2009, 22 players will be selected to play for Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship. In the summer of 2009, up to 30 athletes will move to Calgary as part of centralization to train and work towards the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Men’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Nick Myers
Four former Buckeyes were selected in the 2008 National Lacrosse League draft Sept. 7 at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. Kevin Buchanan was drafted in the first round (No. 11) by the Minnesota Swarm, who also selected Ricky Pages in the fourth round (No. 38). The Chicago Shamrox drafted Josh Funk in the second round with the 21st pick and Steve McKinlay in the fourth round (No. 37). Ohio State was one of just four American universities to have at least four players selected, joining Syracuse, Johns Hopkins and Bellarmine.
Women’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Sue Stimmel
Amanda Barnes and Gregg Gebhard have joined the women’s lacrosse staff as assistant coaches, head coach Sue Stimmel announced Sept. 11.
Barnes, who will work with the goalies, is a 2008 graduate of North Carolina, where she started in goal for the Tar Heels as a senior. During her time at UNC, Barnes helped the Tar Heels to four NCAA appearances, advancing to the quarterfinals each season. Gebhard comes to Ohio State from Bucknell, where he was an assistant coach with the Bison’s women’s program last season. Serving as the squad’s offensive coordinator, Gebhard helped the Bison average a school record 12.8 goals per game.
No. 10 Men’s Soccer (4-1-1; 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: John Bluem
Senior midfielder Danny Irizarry broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half, but the College of Charleston rallied with back-to-back goals to defeat Ohio State, 2-1, Sept. 12 in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. The loss was the first of the season for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes rebounded with a 4-1 win over Furman in game two of the Classic in Charleston, S.C. Sophomore Julian Sisman scored the gamewinner for the Scarlet and Gray in the 51st minute after trailing 1-0 early in the first half. Sophomore Matt Gold scored the equalizer at 42:08 before Sisman’s gamewinner. Irizarry and junior Andrew Magill scored Ohio State’s third and fourth goals, respectively, in the 82nd and 85th minutes.

Women’s Soccer (0-4-2; 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Lori Walker
The Buckeyes dropped a 1-0 decision to Rutgers at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sept. 12. After a scoreless 81 minutes, the Scarlet Knights were able to get on the board in the 82nd minute for the final tally. In the contest, junior goalkeeper Lauren Robertson made five saves.
Two goals scored by freshmen Taylor Moront and Paige Maxwell were not enough for the Buckeyes to overcome No. 12 Duke Sept. 14 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Scarlet and Gray led at halftime on Moront’s goal, assisted by junior Ashley Bowyer, before losing, 4-2.

Men’s Tennis

Four Buckeyes in Bryan Koniecko, Justin Kronauge, Steven Moneke and Matt Allare earned Top 125 rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason standings released Sept. 9. Koniecko and Kronauge are Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, while Moneke stands just outside the Top 10 at No. 11. Allare is No. 96.
In the doubles preseason poll, Koniecko and Kronauge pair up to form the No. 7 doubles tandem in the nation. At No. 17 is the duo of Moneke and Balazs Novak. In the Top 25 is Allare with Mike O’Connell at No. 24.
Women’s Tennis
Head coach: Chuck Merzbacher
Incoming Buckeye Kirsten Flower was ranked No. 41 in the singles poll by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings the ITA announced Sept. 9. Flower is the first Buckeye to earn a Top 100 singles standing since current assistant coach Sadaf Pervez in 2003.
Ohio State opens its fall season this weekend at the William & Mary Invitational Sept. 19-21 in Williamsburg, Va.

Women’s Volleyball (6-3; 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlston
Ohio State posted a 3-1 victory at Loyola Marymount Sept. 10 in Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles. Kristen Dozier produced a team-high 18 points against the Lions with 15 kills, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Kaila Calhoun added 16 points and Chelsea Noble recorded 12. Calhoun had 14 kills, one ace serve and two assist blocks, while Noble contributed 12 kills in the contest.
In their six-game road trip finale, the Buckeyes fell to sixth-ranked Southern California, 3-0, Sept. 12 in the Galen Center on the USC campus. Anna Szerszen posted a team-high 13.5 points with 13 kills and an assist block. Ohio State finished its road swing with a 4-2 record.
