Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Falls, 3-0, to No. 6 Southern California – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (6-3 overall) fell to sixth-ranked Southern California (4-2), 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 27-25) Friday night in the Galen Center on the USC campus. OSU’s Anna Szerszen posted a team-high 13.5 points in the match with 13 kills and an assist block. USC’s Jessica Gysin recorded a match-high 15.5 points for the Trojans with 12 kills, an ace serve, two solo blocks and an assist block. The contest ends a six-match road trip for the Buckeyes, finishing with a 4-2 record.
Ohio State held four early leads in set one off two Trojan kills and two kills from Kaila Calhoun. OSU’s last lead came at 6-4 from a USC error. A kill from Alex Jupiter tied the set at five and a Taylor Carico kill gave the Trojans a 6-5 lead. USC expanded the lead to 8-5 off two Buckeye errors. Ohio State trailed, 9-6, when kills from Ashley Hughes and Kristen Dozier cut the USC lead to one at 9-8. A Gysin kill and an OSU error made it 11-8 Trojans. Southern California expanded the lead to 23-15 and with a Buckeye error reached set point at 24-15 off an OSU error. The Buckeyes stopped the first set point with a Szerszen kill at 24-16. Southern California ended the set with a Gysin kill to win the set, 25-16. USC hit .367 for the set to .133 for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Calhoun and Szerszen each recorded four kills in the set.
Set two saw a Szerszen kill give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. A Gysin kill and a Buckeye error put the Trojans ahead, 2-1. A Dozier kill tied the game at two. Southern California regained the lead at 3-2 off an OSU error. A Jupiter block, a Kimmee Roleder kill and an OSU error opened a 6-2 Trojan lead. Southern California expanded the lead to 13 at 23-10. A Schwarzwalder kill and a Dozier-Schwarzwalder block cut the margin to 11 at 23-12. USC reached set point at 24-12 with a Carico kill. A Trojan error stopped the set point at 24-13. Southern California won the set, 25-13 with a Zoe Garrett kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Trojans hit .667 in the set to -.130 for Ohio State. Dozier and Schwarzwalder posted a team-high two kills each in the set.
A Szerszen kill opened set three for a 1-0 OSU lead. A Gysin-Garrett block and two OSU errors gave USC a 3-1 lead. A Szerszen kill and a Chelsea Noble ace serve tied the set at three. Tied at seven, USC kills from Gysin, Roleder and Garrett gave Southern California a 10-7 lead. USC held a 12-10 before kills from Schwarzwalder and Betsy Hone tied the set at 12. Six ties later at 18-all, a Roleder kill and her two ace serves opened a 21-18 Trojan lead. OSU cut the margin to one at 21-20 with two Dozier kills. Kills from Jupiter and Hone moved the score to 22-21. A Carico kill made it 23-21, USC. A Szerszen kill and a Calhoun-Szerszen block tied the set at 23. USC took a 24-23 lead with a Carico kill. Ohio State tied the set at 24 with a Szerszen kill. The Trojans took a 25-24 lead with a Gysin kill. The Buckeyes tied the set at 25 with a Noble kill. An OSU error set match point at 26-25. Southern California closed out the match with a Jupiter kill for a 27-25 win in the set. The Trojans hit .286 in the set to .257 for Ohio State. OSU’s Szerszen produced a set-high eight kills in the third set.
Southern California hit .389 for the match to .114 for Ohio State. The Trojans had a 41-33 advantage in kills and a 7-1 margin in ace serves. USC’s Roleder and Alli Hillgren collected a match-high two aces each. The Trojans gave up 13 service errors to three for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 38-26 advantage in digs. OSU’s Calhoun had a match-high 12 digs against the Trojans. At the net, Southern California had a 5-3 margin in team blocks. USC’s Gysin collected a match-high three blocks with two solos and an assist block. Trojan setter Carico had a match-high 31 assists in the match while OSU’s Hone recorded 14 and Hughes 11.
Ohio State returns home after its 12-day road trip to travel to Kent, Ohio to play in the Kent State/Mizuno Open. The Buckeyes begin play at 2 p.m. Friday against Duquesne and the faces Chicago State at 3:40 p.m. Ohio State completes play in the Open against host Kent State Saturday at 7 p.m.
