COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeyes continued preparations for the 2008 season Saturday morning during a full-contact, 165-play scrimmage under beautiful blue skies in Ohio Stadium. The scrimmage featured the first, second and third-team units against their respective counterparts on defense.
After practice, the Buckeyes returned to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center where the Columbus media awaited their arrival.
“Today was a good workout,” head coach Jim Tressel said. “We got a lot of snaps in and a lot of kids will have a chance to watch film of themselves in the stadium. I thought they played hard. We’re coming off 13-straight practices so they weren’t at top-end speed, but I think they were trying to be and that’s the important part. The hitting was really good, I thought. Now the coaches will have a marathon film-grading session to see where we go from here.
“There weren’t many turnovers and some guys were making plays. Dane Sanzenbacher jumps out at me … he made some impressive plays out there. Brian Hartline, “Boom” (Dan) Herron was probably the leading rusher. Maurice Wells looked very good as well. I thought all the quarterbacks played well. They all looked good. Joe Bauserman made a great play for a touchdown. Defensively, the guys who showed up, looked very sharp. It was good competition all around.”
Malcolm Jenkins, senior cornerback
On his last season
“You realize that this season is your last chance to do a lot of things. Today was my last Saturday scrimmage. Everyday is your last something.”
On defending different quarterbacks
“With Terrelle (Pryor) you have to be aware when he runs. He can make plays with his legs. With Todd (Boeckman), you have to watch out for his arm, and the same with (Joe) Bauserman. But all of them can throw and run the ball, so we try our best to defend our quarterbacks.”
Ben Person, senior offensive guard
On Saturday’s scrimmage
“We play these scrimmages to win. We had a few fumbles and took 165 snaps. There is a lot of film to watch from today and a lot to learn from.”
On Saturday’s weather
“We couldn’t ask for better weather for the scrimmage. It’s been beautiful this August. The sun is out and you can see the heat coming off the field.”
Todd Boeckman, senior quarterback
On Saturday’s scrimmage
“Both the defense and offense did some good things today. We turned the ball over a couple times, which we can’t do. But overall I think it went well. It was good to go out and throw the ball around.”
On the younger players
“Some of the young guys made some good plays during the scrimmage. They have all really impressed me. They have some skills and they’re going to do some good things for us this season.”
