Three Buckeyes Earn Academic All-District Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

CoSIDA names pair of OSU gymnasts and women’s hockey student-athlete
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State’s Liana Bonanno from the women’s hockey team, Alyssa Meyer from the women’s gymnastics team and Jake Bateman from the men’s gymnastics team all received academic all-district honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bonanno and Bateman were first-team selections and will now be placed on the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. Meyer was a second-team selection.
To qualify for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and must be a sophomore in both athletic and academic standing.
Bonanno, a junior goaltender from Mount Sinai, N.Y., is a two-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete as well as two-time member of the WCHA All-Academic Team. She has earned the team’s academic award for three-consecutive seasons, is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten at-large selection. Bonanno was 14-13-3 during the 2007-08 season with a 2.91 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. The physics major is one of just 60 Ohio State undergraduates to participate in the Honors Collegium within the school’s Honors and Scholars program.
Bateman, a junior from Kingsport, Tenn., is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and twice has been named a College Gymnastics Association’s First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He earned his first-career All-America honor this season, placing sixth with 87.7 points in the all-around at the NCAA championships. Bateman was second (87.95) in the all-around at the Big Ten championships and was tabbed a first-team all-conference member. In 2008, the tri-captain was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week twice, becoming the first Buckeye since Monahan in 2004 to earn back-to-back honors.
Meyer, a junior from Chesterfield, Mo., carries a 4.0 GPA in exercise science. She is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. A 2008 OSU tri-captain, Meyer was one of the Buckeyes’ top performers on bars and floor and helped lead them to a school-record score at regionals. She competed in all 13 meets and was named the team’s most dedicated gymnast and earned the academic achievement award as a sophomore.
