Men’s Hockey: Palmer Picks Up CCHA Goaltender of the Week Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Buckeye sophomore Joseph Palmer has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week, the league announced Monday. Palmer, a native of Yorkville, N.Y., backstopped the Buckeyes to a win and tie on the road at No. 9 Notre Dame over the weekend, allowing just three goals and making 58 saves in the series.
In the series opener Friday, Palmer stopped 22-of-23 shots in the Buckeyes’ 3-1 victory over the Irish. He had 10 saves in the third period to protect the Buckeyes’ then one-goal lead. Palmer and the Buckeye penalty kill were 6-for-6 in the game, with Palmer making seven saves on the PK in the first period alone.
Saturday, Palmer stopped 36-of-38 shots, including all 19 he faced in the third period and overtime, as Ohio State and Notre Dame tied, 2-2. His 36 saves are the third-highest total of his career, as he was named the first star of the game.
On the weekend, Palmer had a 1.44 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.
Palmer and the Buckeyes will close out regular-season action vs. No. 5 Miami this week. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday in Value City Arena in Columbus and at 7:35 p.m. Friday in Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
