Men’s Hockey: Buckeyes Post 3-1 Victory over No. 9 Notre Dame – Ohio State Buckeyes

SOUTH BEND, Ind. The Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated No. 9 Notre Dame, 3-1, Friday in the Joyce Center. The Buckeyes trailed, 1-0, after the first period but got goals from Tommy Goebel and Patrick Schafer late in the second to overtake the Irish and held on for the win, capped by Matt McIlvane’s empty-net goal. Buckeye goalie Joseph Palmer had 22 saves in the game, including 10 in the third.
The Buckeyes and Irish will meet in game two of the series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the Joyce Center.
Notre Dame scored the lone goal of the first period with less than a minute remaining, as Evan Rankin redirected Christian Hanson’s shot from the point at 19:41. The Buckeyes held the Irish scoreless on two power-play chances, with Palmer making seven saves on the penalty kill. The Irish outshot the Buckeyes, 10-8, and also had one shot ring off the post. The Buckeyes had one power-play chance in the period.
The Buckeyes scored twice in the final 3:23 of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Goebel tallied his team-best 20th goal of the season at 16:37 when he threw the puck at the Irish net and it deflected off a defender and past goalie Jordan Pearce. John Albert, the team’s assist leader, had the helper on the goal, as he found Goebel at the left post. Schafer gave the Buckeyes the lead when he gathered the rebound of a Tom Fritsche shot at the side of the net and was able to backhand it into the net for his third gal of the season. The Buckeyes put nine shots on net in the period while holding the Irish to just 3. Notre Dame had three power-play chances in the period and put one shot on net with the man advantage. Ohio State was scoreless on two power-play chances in the period, with one lasting just eight seconds.
The Irish outshot the Buckeyes, 10-6, in the third. Ohio State sealed the win with an empty-net goal by McIlvane with eight seconds remaining. With 17.1 seconds remaining and the Irish net empty, McIlvane won the faceoff deep in the Buckeye zone. Goebel got to the puck and wrapped it around the boards. McIlvane picked it up outside the blueline and skated in alone on the Irish net for his fifth goal of the year. Each team had one power-play chance in the period, with ND putting three shots on net.
Each team had 23 shots in the game. Palmer made 22 saves in 59:55 in net. Peace had 20 stops in 59:01 for the Irish.
The Buckeyes stopped the Irish on all six power-play chances in the period. Ohio State was scoreless on four opportunities of its own.
Postgame Notes
Goebel is the first Buckeye to score 20 goals in a season since Mathieu Beaudoin had 23 and Rod Pelley scored 22 in 2004-05. His 32 points also are the most for a Buckeye since 2004-05.
Goebel leads the Buckeyes with a career-high tying 32 points this season. He now has 111 career collegiate points, with 53 goals and 58 assists. As a Buckeye, he has 32 goals and 57 points.
The win was the Buckeyes’ seventh come-from-behind victory this season.
Schafer’s goal was his first since Dec. 8 vs. St. Lawrence.
Albert now has a team-high 16 helpers this year and is tied for second on the team with 19 points.
Fritsche has 105 career points to tie for 43rd in program history.
