Men’s Hockey: Goebel’s Last-Second Goal Lifts Buckeyes to 3-2 Win on Senior Night – Ohio State Buckeyes
2/16/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio On senior night in Value City Arena, Buckeye senior Tommy Goebel deflected a John Albert shot into the Northern Michigan net with less than a second remaining to lift the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats. The Buckeyes came back from a goal down entering the third for the win, with rookie Peter Boyd scoring his second goal of the game on the power play at 16:08 to tie the game.
The eight members of the Ohio State senior class were honored in a postgame ceremony Saturday. The group includes Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.), John Dingle (Shaker Heights, Ohio), Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio), Goebel (Parma, Ohio), Kyle Hood (Osoyoos, British Columbia), Johann Kroll (Plymouth, Minn.), Phil Lauderdale (Greenwich, Conn.) and Matt McIlvane (Naperville, Ill.).
The teams were scoreless in the first period until Boyd put the Buckeyes on the board with 22 seconds remaining. With the teams skating 4-on-4, defensemen freshman Corey Toy and Kroll worked the puck into the NMU zone. Boyd gathered the puck at the left post; NMU goalie Brian Stewart covered that post, but Boyd was able to skate behind the net and score on the wrap-around. The Buckeyes outshot the Wildcats in the period, 13-5. The Wildcats had the only power-play chance in the period.
Northern Michigan scored twice in 4:05 of the second period to tie the game and take the lead. Gregor Hanson scored at 12:01 following a scramble in front of the net. Mark Olver put the Wildcats ahead with a snapshot on the short side at 16:06 with NMU on the power play. The Buckeyes outshot the Wildcats again, 12-9. NMU had the lone power-play opportunity.
Boyd’s second goal of the game came at 16:08 with Ohio State on the power play. At the points, Shane Sims passed to Nick Biondo, who got the puck down to Boyd at the right face-off circle. His shot beat Stewart five-hole for his ninth goal of the year. On the winning goal, Albert picked off a NMU clearing attempt and fired the puck toward the net. Goebel skated in behind Stewart and was able to deflect it in for his team-best 19th goal this season. The goal was reviewed, but the referee ruled it had crossed the line before time expired. Ohio State put seven shots on net in the period and held the Wildcats to two shots on net. Ohio State converted the only power-play chance of the period.
In net, Lauderdale made the first start of his career and played the first 49 seconds. Joseph Palmer came in and played the final 59:11, making 14 saves and allowing two goals.
Each team was 1-for-2 on the power play in the game.

Postgame Quotes
John Markell, Ohio State men’s hockey head coach
On how Ohio State closed out the game
“We played a really good third period. This one was really nice to get for our seniors.”
On the game
“Our seniors have to produce if we are going to win. Boyd had a couple nice goals. It was really tough out there tonight. Northern Michigan is a really big, physical hockey team. I’m really happy for our seniors and their families.”
On senior goalie Phil Lauderdale
“Lauderdale deserved to start tonight. He’s been here for five years so I decided to start him. He’s really bright and studies as much as he practices. He really cares about our program.”
Tommy Goebel, Ohio State senior forward
On the game-winning goal
“It was a great pass and I was fortunate enough to be there to tip it in. Waiting for the referee to check the time on the clock was hard. But afterwards, it really felt good because we really wanted to get the win.”
On senior night
“I tried not to think about it, but it was really hard not to. I don’t think it will be until later, sitting in the locker room, when it hits me.”
Peter Boyd, Ohio State freshman forward
On his two goals
“On the second goal, I got the pass and tried to make it to the goal as quick as possible. The first goal looked a lot better than the second.”
On winning on senior night
“We really wanted to support the seniors and thank them for leading us this year. We knew we had to play hard for them. We also knew we needed to win and we accomplished that tonight.”
Walt Kyle, Northern Michigan head coach
On the game winning goal
“It was the right call by the officials. They did a legit job tonight. A couple of our guys stopped playing because they thought it was icing. However, Ohio State kept playing and made a good play to win the game. It is a great learning lesson for us, a hard lesson, but a good one.”
On the game overall
“There was a ton of energy tonight. Both teams played hard and I thought it was an even game for the most part. The third period for us wasn’t as good. I feel we didn’t play as well. Ohio State came in at the beginning of the third and controlled the game.”
