Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Drops 3-0 Decision to No. 11 Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (10-11 overall, 1-8 Big Ten) fell to 11th-ranked Minnesota (18-3, 8-1) in three sets (25-18, 26-24, 25-21) Friday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Katie Dull scored a match-high 21 points with a match-high 20 kills and an ace serve. Minnesota’s Brook Dieter scored 20.5 for the Golden Gophers with 16 kills, one ace serve, three solo blocks and one assist block.
With set one tied at four a kill and solo block by Dieter and an OSU error gave Minnesota a 7-4 lead. The Gophers took the lead to four with a Kelly Schmidt kill at 11-7. Two Minnesota errors and a block and kill from Kelli Barhorst tied the match at 11. Ohio State took a 12-11 lead off a Gopher error. Dieter tied the set at 12 with a kill. An OSU error and a Rachel Hartmann-Lauren Gibbemeyer block gave the Gophers a 14-12 lead. At 16-14, a Gopher error cut the margin to one at 16-15 but Minnesota scored the next seven points to take a 23-15 lead. Two Gopher errors and a Kristen Dozier kill made it 23-18. Minnesota reached set point at 24-18 with a Dieter kill. The Gophers won the set, 25-18 with a solo block by Pamela Luiz. Minnesota hit .171 for the set to -.034 for Ohio State.
Set two saw several early lead changes in set two and was tied at seven when two OSU errors and a Luiz-Schmidt block gave Minnesota a 10-7 lead. Trailing 11-8, a Dull kill, a Betsy Hone ace serve and a Gopher error tied the set at 11. At 12-all, scored five consecutive points to open a 17-12 lead. At 18-13, a Kaila Calhoun kill, two Minnesota errors and a Sarah Mignin ace serve cut the lead to one at 18-17. A Buckeye error and kills from Dozier and Dull tied the set at 19. A Dieter kill and an OSU error made it 21-19. A Dull kill and a Schmidt-Kyla Roehrig block made it 22-20. Kills from Dull and Dieter moved the score to 23-21. A Jessica Granquist ace serve made it set point for Minnesota at 24-21. OSU stopped two set points with kills from Barhorst and Calhoun and tied the set at 24 with a Hone kill. A Gibbemeyer kill gave Minnesota a second set point at 25-24. Dieter, with a kill, ended the set at 26-24 to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead in the match. Minnesota hit .241 in the set to .159 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State broke a 2-2 tie in set three with a Dozier kill and a Calhoun-Allie Schwarzwalder block for a 4-2 lead. The Buckeye held the lead until at 13-all, a Buckeye error made it 14-13 Minnesota. The Gophers broke a 14-14 tie with kills from Luiz and Diter to lead 16-14. Buckeye kills from Barhorst and Dull tied the set at 16. Minnesota, with a Roehrig kill and a Christine Tan ace serve took an 18-16 lead. Trailing, 21-18, kills from Dozier and Dull cut the lead to one at 21-20. A Gibbemeyer kill and two OSU errors made it 24-20 with Minnesota serving match point. A Dozier kill stopped the point at 24-21. The Gophers, with a Dieter kill, won the set, 25-21, to win the match, 3-0. Minnesota hit .244 in the set to .255 for Ohio State.
Minnesota hit .219 for the match to .150 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 44-33 advantage in kill with Minnesota holding a 4-3 edge in ace serves. Ohio State gave up seven service errors to three for Minnesota. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 47-48 margin in digs with Tan recording a match-high 13. At the net, Minnesota had a 12.5 to three advantage in team blocks. Gibbemeyer (0-5) and Luiz (1-4) shared match-high honors with five total blocks each. Ohio State’s Hone recorded a match-high 35 assists while Hartmann had 28 for the Gophers.
Ohio State will host Iowa (12-9, 4-5) Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena
