Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Falls, 3-1, at Indiana – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (10-9 overall, 1-6 Big Ten) lost, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 27-29), at Indiana (10-9, 2-5) Friday night in a match played in Assembly Hall. OSU’s Katie Dull and Indiana’s Erica Short shared match-high point honors with 17 each. Dull post 15 kills, adding an ace serve and two assist blocks. Short produced a match-high 16 kills and a solo block.
Two Indiana errors and a Kaila Calhoun kill broke a 6-6 tie to give Ohio State a 9-6 lead in set one. Trailing 13-11, Indiana with a Buckeye error and an Ashley Benson-Kelsey Hall block tied the set at 13. The Buckeyes scored the next six points starting with an IU error and a Kelli Barhorst kill. A Dull ace serve, a Calhoun kill, an Indiana error and a Barhorst-Calhoun block gave Ohio State a six-point lead. A Kill by Short and three from Hall cut the lead to 19-17. Trailing, 22-20, Indiana used a Taylor Wittmer kill and a Caitlin Cox ace serve to tie the set at 22. A Betsy Hone-Kristen Dozier block and an Indiana error gave Ohio State set point at 24-22. The Buckeyes won the set with a Dull kill at 25-22. Ohio State hit .175 in the set to .100 for Indiana.
Tied at two in the second set, a Wittmer kill, a Short block, an OSU error and a Short kill put Indiana ahead for good at 6-2. Ohio State cut the lead to one at 8-7 with a Calhoun kill but two kills from Hall and one from Mary Chaudoin gave the Hoosiers an 11-7 lead. Indiana expanded the lead to 10 at 20-10 with a Short kill. A Lexie Woodson kill made it 24-14 and set point for the Hoosiers. A Hoosier error made it 24-15. Woodson closed out the set with a kill for a 25-15 win, tying the match at one game each. Indiana hit .375 in the set to .111 for Ohio State.
Tied at five in set three, two OSU errors and kills from Chaudoin and Short gave Indiana a 9-5 lead. Trailing, 15-11, a Dozier-Ashley Hughes block, kills from Dozier and Calhoun and a Sarah Mignin ace serve tied the set at 15. The Hoosiers have a 9-3 run to reach set point at 24-17 with a Woodson kill. The Buckeyes stopped the set point at 24-18 with a Barhorst-Dull block. Indiana, with a Wittmer kill, won the set, 25-18, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Indiana hit .273 for the set to .150 for Ohio State.
Ohio State broke a three-all tie in the fourth set with a Dull kill and an Indiana error for a 5-3 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead, expanding it to four at 14-10. Trailing, 18-15, kills from Benson and Hall and a Chaudoin-Woodson block tied the set at 18. Two OSU errors gave the Hoosiers a 20-18 lead. At 23-21, a Dull kill and an IU error tied the set at 23. A Dozier kill made it 24-23 for a Buckeye set point. A Wittmer kill tied the set at 24. Kills from Dozier and Benson made it 25-all. A Benson kill made it 26-25 and match point for Indiana. A Hone kill tied the set at 26. A Benson kill made it 27-26 for IU’s second match point. Dozier stopped the match point with a kill at 27-all. A Buckeye error made it 28-27 for Indiana’s third match point. Indiana won the set, 29-27, with a Chaudoin-Woodson block to win the match, 3-1. The Hoosiers hit .176 in the set to .173 for the Buckeyes.
In the match, Indiana hit .222 to .155 for Ohio State. The Hoosiers had a 60-54 edge in kills and had a four-two advantage in kills. Ohio State gave up seven service errors to five for Indiana. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 73-70 advantage in digs. Ohio State’s Laura Kastein and IU’s Cox shared match-high dig honors with 15 each. At the net, OSU had a 9-8 edge in team blocks. Ohio State’s Dozier and Indiana’s Chaudoin each recorded a match-high five assist blocks in the contest. At setter, Hone had a match-high 37 assists for the Buckeyes with Hughes adding 11. Indiana’s Chaudoin had a team-high 24 assists with Haley Koetter adding 20.
Ohio State continues on the road Saturday playing at No. 1 Penn State (19-0, 7-0) at 8:30 p.m. in Rec Hall.
