Men’s Hockey: Ohio State Drops Game at No. 8 Miami, 7-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State lost to No. 8 Miami, 7-3, to close out a home-and-home Central Collegiate Hockey Association series Saturday in Steve Cady Arena, in Oxford. The teams split the series, after the Buckeyes won the first game, 4-3, in a shootout Friday in Columbus. Kyle Reed and John Albert each had a goal and an assist for the Buckeyes, while Hunter Bishop had two assists.
The Buckeyes return home next weekend for two games with Lake Superior State. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.
There was no scoring in the first period. Each team had nine shots in the period. The RedHawks were scoreless on three power-play chances and Ohio State was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
The teams combined for seven goals in the period, with Miami taking a 5-2 lead into the second intermission. The RedHawks, who outshot the Buckeyes, 18-2, in the period, scored four times in the first 5:50 of the period, including three power-play goals. Pat Cannone opened the scoring at 1:13, followed by Justin Mercier’s tally at 2:27, with both coming with the man advantage. Gary Steffes scored an even-strength goal at 3:21. Carter Camper closed out the run with a power-play goal at 5:50. Ohio State’s Albert answered 1:28 later, scoring off an assist from Reed. After Miami’s Steffes tallied at 10:15, Reed added a goal of his own, with Albert and Bishop recording the assists. Miami converted all three power-play chances in the period and Ohio State did not score on its one opportunity.
The Buckeyes cut the score to 5-3 on Corey Elkins’ first goal of the season, as he took a pass from Bishop. Nick Biondo had the second assist on the goal, as he kept the puck in and took a shot to get the puck down low. RedHawk Justin Vaive scored on the power play at 11:13 and Steffes completed his hat trick 31 seconds later (11:44). Ohio State put 12 shots on net in the period, while Miami had six shots.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 33-23. Ohio State junior goalie Joseph Palmer started the game and played the first 25:50, making 16 saves and allowing four goals. Dustin Carlson had 10 saves and allowed three goals in 34:10. Miami’s Connor Knapp made 20 saves.
The RedHawks were 4-for-8 with the man advantage in the game. Ohio State was scoreless on six chances.
Postgame Notes
Bishop’s points were the first of his Buckeye career. He ended the game a team-best +3.
Albert had four points in the series, with a goal and three assists. He had two points in each contest vs. the RedHawks.
Reed had the third two-point game of his career and his first since Feb. 29 at Miami.
