New Orleans, La. – LSU scored 31 straight points after falling behind, 10-0, and then held off an Ohio State the rest of the way to claim its second national title in five years with a 38-24 win over the Buckeyes Monday in the Allstate BCS championship game played at the Superdome. Quarterback Matt Flynn passed for 174 yards and threw four touchdowns to three different receivers to spark the Tigers.
Ohio State was led by the running of Chris “Beanie” Wells, who rushed for 146 yards and scored on the longest touchdown rush in BCS championship game history: 65-yards early in the first quarter to give the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead. A 44-yard pass play from Todd Boeckman to Brandon Saine led to a 25-yard Ryan Pretorius field goal and a 10-0 Buckeye lead midway through the first half.
At that point, Flynn and the Tigers turned things in their favor. Flynn hit Richard Dickson with a 13-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 10-all. After a 38-yard field goal attempt by Pretorius was blocked on Ohio State’s next possession, Flynn found Brandon LaFell from 10 yards out for a 17-10 LSU lead. A turnover led to a third LSU touchdown of the half and a 24-10 lead that the Buckeyes would not be able to overcome.
Ohio State ends the season with an 11-2 record while LSU finishes with a 12-2 record.
