Tessa Bonhomme of the women’s hockey team tied the Ohio State record for points in a game with five Saturday and totaled seven in a sweep of North Dakota, Jan. 4-5 at the OSU Ice Rink. The native of Sudbury, Ontario, opened the scoring with a goal 1:24 into the second period Saturday and went on to set up four more goals to lead the Buckeyes to a 7-3 win. Three of her assists were in the third stanza to tie the OSU record for points in a period. The five-point performance matched the record last reached by Emma Laaksonen, March 2, 2001.
In the game Friday, Bonhomme assisted on the game-tying goal at 12:20 of the third period before scoring the game-winner with 31 seconds remaining in regulation for the 3-2 victory. For the series, Bonhomme collected four of her points on the power play, helping the Buckeyes to a 5-of-10 mark with the man-advantage. The team captain also anchored the penalty kill that was 10-of-11.
With her seven points, Bonhomme increased her season total to 27 to lead the Buckeyes. It also is the highest point total by any defenseman in the nation, leading the rest of the pack by 11 points. She is tied for ninth in the nation with 0.90 assists per game and her 18 helpers are tied for second overall in the WCHA. Bonhomme ranks third in the league in points, tied for sixth in goals (9) and tied for fourth in power play points (9). Her five assists vs. the Fighting Sioux moved her into second in career assists in the OSU record books with 75.
Senior heavyweight J.D. Bergman kept his perfect record in tact at 15-0 (10-0 in dual action) Jan. 4 after posting a 17-6 major decision over No. 18 Jermail Porter of Kent State. The win helped the wrestling team, who won 27-6, end a two-match losing streak to the Golden Flashes. Bergman, the second-ranked heavyweight in the nation, now has 111 OSU wins and his win last Friday also was his 50th-career dual victory.
Athletics Good Stuff
Men’s Basketball (11-3; 2-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Thad Matta
In its Big Ten Conference opener Jan. 3, Ohio State defeated Illinois, 74-58, on the road at Assembly Hall.
Senior guard Jamar Butler led the way for the Buckeyes in the win over the Illini, scoring a career-high 32 points while adding six assists.
The victory marks the fourth consecutive time the Buckeyes have beaten the Illini and the second time in a row Ohio State has won in Assembly Hall.
The Buckeyes won their 18th consecutive Big Ten contest with a 62-51 win over Northwestern Jan. 6 in Value City Arena.
Freshman center Kosta Koufos recorded his fourth double-double and third in four games of his career against the Wildcats on 17 points and 12 rebounds. Butler also recorded his third double-double of the season on a career-high 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

No. 19 Women’s Basketball (11-3; 2-1 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes rebounded from their Big Ten Conference opening loss to Michigan State with a 66-42 win over Michigan in Value City Arena Jan. 3.
Freshman center Jantel Lavender led the Buckeyes with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season against the Wolverines.
Senior forward Tamarah Riley recorded her first-career double-double vs. Michigan off 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Ohio State followed its effort against Michigan with a 73-65 win over Iowa in Iowa City Jan. 6. The Scarlet and Gray have now won 34 of its last 37 Big Ten regular-season games and 98 of the last 113 games overall.
Junior guard Ashlee Trebilcock led the Buckeyes with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting against the Hawkeyes.
Lavender, who has scored in double digits every game this season, maintained her streak with 12 points on the day against Iowa.

Ohio State finished runners-up to LSU in the Allstate BCS championship game dropping, 38-24, at the Superdome.
The Buckeyes were led by running back Chris “Beanie” Wells, who rushed for 146 yards and scored on the longest touchdown rush in BCS championship game history (65-yards) early in the first quarter to give the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead.
Ohio State played in its second-consecutive BCS national championship Monday night at the Superdome in New Orleans, La.
LSU’s win is its second national championship in five years and third overall. The Buckeyes were seeking their eighth all-time national championship and second in six years.
The loss drops Ohio State’s record to 11-2 on the season and to 1-2 all-time in BCS title games. LSU finishes 12-2.
Ohio State is now 4-2 all-time in BCS games and 18-21 all-time in bowl games.
No. 4 Men’s Gymnastics
Head Coach: Miles Avery
Ohio State concluded the preseason with the Varsity Exhibition Jan. 5 in the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. Fifteen Buckeye alumni returned to campus to show off their skills, while head coach Miles Avery announced the 2008 team captains.
Jake Bateman, DJ Bucher and Jimmy Wickham were named the leaders of the team.

Men’s Hockey (7-15-2; 3-10-1 CCHA)

The Buckeyes split their weekend series against Alaska Jan. 4-5 in Value City Arena. Ohio State put five goals on the board in game two to beat the Nanooks, 5-2. The Scarlet and Gray tallied seven goals on the weekend, a season high, set twice before.
Tom Fritsche now has 102 career points to tie for 46th in Ohio State history and Jason DeSantis’ assist in game two was the 50th point of his career. He has 13 goals and 37 assists in 127 games as a Buckeye.
Ohio State dropped a 4-2 decision to Alaska Jan. 4. After being down, 2-0, after an early goal in the first period and another score in the second period by Alaska, the Buckeyes cut the Nanooks’ lead to one after a goal by senior Matt McIlvane. However, Ohio State was unable to rally from the deficit.
In game one, freshman Peter Boyd had the first two-assist and multiple-point game of his career.

Ohio State completed the series sweep of WCHA rival North Dakota Jan. 4-5 in the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes beat the Fighting Sioux, 3-2, in game one before dropping UND in game two, 7-3.
Senior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme had a five-point game Jan. 5, en route to tying the single-game OSU record, last reached by fellow blueliner Emma Laaksonen (2001-04), March 2, 2001. With three points in the third period she also matched the Buckeye record for points in a period.
Along with Bonhomme’s stellar offensive performance, the Ohio State top line of Morgan Marziali (2g, 1a), Hayley Klassen (1g, 2a) and Erin Keys (1g, 3a) combined for 10 points. Defensemen Lisa Chesson and Shannon Reilly also each had a goal and assist in game two.
Bonhomme scored with 31 seconds to as Ohio State rallied from a one-goal deficit to beat North Dakota, 3-2, in game one. The team captain totaled seven points in the series.

Women’s Swimming and Diving (2-3; 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Toledo, 181.5-118.5, Jan. 5 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 2-3 on the season.
Jill Lockhart led the Buckeyes with three first place finishes. The sophomore captured the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.32), 200 backstroke (2:15.42) and the 200 individual medley (2:18.94).
Finishing with two wins for the Scarlet and Gray was freshman Anita Beck, who took first in the 200 butterfly (2:17.22) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.64). The Buckeyes picked up their first win of the day in the 200 freestyle as freshman Samantha Cheverton won in a time of 2:03.14. In the 100 breaststroke, Ohio State sophomore Colleen Schweitzer touched the wall first in a time of 1:12.85, while sophomore Megan Alexander won the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.15. The 400 freestyle relay team of Haley Mitchell, Cameron Russell, Annie Rennebohm and Beck closed out the meet with a top finish in a time of 3:56.16.
On the boards, freshman Bianca Alvarez earned her fourth-consecutive win on the one-meter with 301.28 points. Junior Chelsea Davis took first in the three-meter after recording 350.78 points.

The Buckeyes opened their 2008 campaign with exhibition play at the Innisbrook Resort Volleyball Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
In its first game Dec. 28, Ohio State defeated Manitoba, 3-1. It then went on to beat Queens, 3-1, Dec. 29 before falling to Brandon, 3-2, Dec. 30. The Buckeyes concluded the event with a 3-0 loss to McMaster Dec. 31.

Senior heavyweight and second-ranked J.D. Bergman’s perfect record remained in tact at 15-0 with his 17-6 major decision over No. 18 Jermail Porter.
Other Buckeyes garnering wins in the in-state match up were J Jaggers (141), Lance Palmer (149), Jason Johnstone (157), Colt Sponseller (165), Alex Picazo (174), Mike Pucillo (184) and John Weakley (197).
Ohio State is off to its best start since 2001-02 with its 9-1 start in 2007-08.
