Men’s Hockey: Buckeyes Fall in Overtime to Lake Superior State, 6-5 – Ohio State Buckeyes
1/26/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. The Buckeye men’s hockey team fought back from two goals down to tie the game at 5 in the third period, but Lake Superior State scored its fifth power-play goal of the contest 42 seconds into overtime to give the Lakers a 6-5 victory Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena. The teams split the weekend series, with Ohio State winning the opener, 4-3.
Buckeye senior and alternate captain Tommy Goebel had his second two-goal game of the weekend to lead the squad, including the tying goal at 7:12 of the third period. He added an assist for his first three-point game as a Buckeye and had five points on the weekend. Rookie John Albert had his second-consecutive two-assist night, while classmate Kyle Reed had a goal and an assist for two points.
Lake Superior State led 3-0 after the first period on two power-play goals and a tally on a delayed penalty, with Troy Schwab scoring the first two goals. His first came on the power play at 5:53, after Steven Kaunisto kept the puck in the Buckeye zone on a clearing attempt. Schwab’s second goal came after a rush from the Laker zone, assisted by Nathan Perkovich. Schwab’s initial shot was saved, but he was able to jam the puck in at 11:19. Dan Eves put the Lakers up 3-0 at 15:43, completing a tic-tac-toe play with Zac MacVoy and Will Acton with Lake Superior on the power play. The Lakers outshot the Buckeyes, 9-6, and had the only power play chances in the period, converting 2-of-4.
The second period included five goals and a delay of more than 20 minutes to replace a broken pane of glass. The Buckeyes scored twice in the first six minutes to cut the lead to one (3-2). With the Buckeyes on the power play, senior defenseman Jason DeSantis kept the puck in at the blue line and his floating shot from the right point found the back of the net just 46 seconds into the period for his third goal of the season. Freshman Corey Toy tallied his first career goal at 5:56, one-timing a drop pass from Goebel with the teams skating 4-on-4. Goalie Joseph Palmer had the second assist, as he got the puck to Goebel in the Buckeye zone. Will Acton scored at 9:06 on the power play, as his shot from the left post trickled in to put the Lakers ahead, 4-2. Goebel then scored a goal of his own at 11:29. After cycling down low with linemates and rookies Sergio Somma and Albert, Goebel’s wrist shot from the slot got through for his team-best 15th goal of the season. With 5:29 remaining in the period, a pane of glass in the Buckeye zone shattered, causing a lengthy delay while the Lakers were on the power play. The Lakers scored just 21 seconds after action resumed, when Perkovich’s shot got through on the short side. The Buckeyes put 14 shots on net in the period and Lake State had seven shots. Each team had three power-play chances. OSU was 1-for-3 and LSSU was 2-for-3.
Reed brought the Buckeyes within one (5-4) just 3:26 into the third. Peter Boyd passed out from the corner to Reed all alone in front of the net and he pushed the puck under LSSU goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson for his sixth tally this season. Matt McIlvane picked up the second assist on the tally. Goebel tied the score at 5 at the 7:12 mark. Shots by Reed and Albert both were stopped, but Mahoney-Wilson could not control the puck and Goebel jammed it in from just outside the crease. Neither team could break the tie in regulation, as the game went to overtime. The Buckeyes killed off a penalty for the final 1:16 of the period, with the advantage carrying into overtime. The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 16-5, and each team was 0-for-1 on the power play.
The Lakers won just 42 seconds into overtime when Matt Cowie found MacVoy open back-door for a power-play goal, giving the Lakers the 6-5 win. OSU was unable to get a shot on net in the overtime.
Palmer started and played the first 40 minutes, making 11 saves and giving up five goals. Freshman Dustin Carlson played the final 20:42 and had five saves, all in the third period.
Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play in the game. Lake Superior State was 5-for-8 with the man advantage.
