COLUMBUS, Ohio – The OhioState (7-4 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team will travel to Purdue (8-5, 1-1) Friday and Indiana (10-4, 1-1) Saturday for Big Ten Conference matches. Both matches will start at 7 p.m. Last week in St. John Arena, the Buckeyes fell, 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 30-24, 26-30, 15-13) to Northwestern and defeated MichiganState, 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 31-29).

The Big Ten Network has announced that they will broadcast the Ohio State-Minnesota match live in St. John Arena, Friday, Oct. 5. The match will start at 6 p.m. to accommodate the Network.

Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in points per game with a 5.22 average. Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) ranks second at 4.35 with Katie Dull (Fr., Solo, Ohio) third at 3.49. Meyer leads the team in kills per game at 4.24 with McCarthy second at 3.24 and Dull third at 3.06. Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.) is the top percentage hitter on the squad with a .371 average. Meyer ranks second at .306 and McCarthy third at .301. At setter Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) has an 11.03 assists per game average with Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) averaging 10.21. McCarthy has produced a team-high 17 ace serves with a .46 per game average. Dull (.23) and Meyer (.22) are tied for second with eight aces each. Defensively, Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has a team-high 2.68 digs per game average for the Buckeyes. Calhoun ranks second at 2.51 with Meyer third at 2.35. At the net, Meyer leads the team in blocking with a 1.38 per game average with five solos and 46 assists. McCarthy ranks second at 1.00 with 11 solos and 26 assists. Dozier ranks third at .97 with three solos and 33 assists. Meyer has a .977 reception percentage to lead the squad with 175 reception attempts with four errors. Stevens ranks second at .967 with 272 attempts with nine errors. As a team, OhioState is averaging 19.70 points, 15.16 kills per game and is hitting .244. Head coach Dave Shondell is in his fifth season for the Boilermakers. Purdue has an 8-5 overall record and is 1-1 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers lost 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-25) at Minnesota and won 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-21) at Iowa.
Stephanie Lynch leads Purdue in points per game with a 4.91 average. Danita Merlau is second at 4.54 with Samantha Mader third at 3.25. Lynch is averaging a team-high 4.08 kills per game average. Merlau ranks second at 3.98 with Mader third at 2.90. Lynch leads the team in hitting percentage at .365. At setter, Jaclyn Hart leads the team in assists per game at 9.89 with Sam Gray second at 7.90. Kelli Miller has a team-high 17 ace serves (.35 per game) with Gray second with eight (.40) and Jessica Ullrich seven (.19). Defensively, Anne Mastandrea leads the team with a 5.69 digs per game average. Kelli Miller ranks second at 3.75 and Merlau is third at 3.60. At the net, Lynch leads the team with a 1.19 blocks per game average with 12 solos and 45 assists. Carrie Gurnell ranks second at 1.09 with eight solos and 27 assists and Kristen Arthurs is third at .74 with five solos and 23 assists. As a team, Purdue is averaging 19.79 points and 15.71 kills per game while hitting .210. The Boilermakers average 14.29 assists, 1.15 aces, 19.96 digs and 2.94 blocks per game. Opponents are averaging 17.95 points and 14.71 kills per game while hitting .165. Purdue opponents average 13.48 assists, 1.04 aces, 18.75 digs and 2.20 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – PURDUE SERIES
OhioState has a 38-30 lead in the series with Purdue. In West Lafayette, The Buckeyes are 13-15 against the Boilermakers. Last season, OhioState lost 3-2 (30-26, 27-30, 29-31, 34-32, 15-7) at Purdue and won 3-0 (30-18, 31-29, 31-29) at OhioState.

Head coach Sherry Dunbar is in her first season for the Hoosiers. Indiana is 10-4 overall and is 1-1 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers opened Big Ten play with a 3-2 (29-31, 23-30, 30-21, 31-29, 15-13) win at Iowa and a 3-0 (32-30, 30-16, 30-21) loss at Minnesota.
Erica Short has a team-high 5.17 points per game average for Indiana. Lauren Ditteon ranks second at 3.56 with Ashley Benson third at 3.38. Short has a team-high 4.65 kills per game average with Benson second at 2.77 and Ditteon third at 2.76. Ditteon leads the team in hitting percentage at .308. At setter, Mara Hilgenberg has a 12.82 assist per game average. Leading the team in ace serves is Juli Pierce with 26 (.51 per game). Ditteon ranks second with 21 (.41) and Hilgenberg third with 11 (.22). Defensively, Pierce leads the team in digs per game at 3.92. Kelsey Hall ranks second at 2.91 with Ditteon third at 2.25. At the net, Ashley Benson has a team-high 1.12 blocks per game average with five solos and 43 assists. Taylor Whittmer ranks second at 1.05 with three solos and 42 assists. As a team, Indiana is averaging 19.98 points and 15.45 kills per game and is hitting .228. The Hoosiers average 14.25 assists, 1.75 aces, 14.41 digs and 2.79 blocks per game. Opponents average 19.10 points and 14.16 kills per game while hitting .186. Indiana opponents average 13.45 assists, 1.25 aces, 15.24 digs and 2.17 blocks per game.
OHIO STATE – INDIANA SERIES
OhioState has a 38-22 lead in the series with Indiana. The Buckeyes enjoy a 14-13 advantage in matches played in Bloomington. OhioState has won the last seven matches including a 3-1 (25-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-25) win at Indiana and a 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-20) win at OhioState last season.
Head Coach Jim Stone announces he will retire after the 2007 season
Jim Stone, OhioState women’s volleyball head coach, announced Monday he will retire effective July 31, 2008.
“I have been coaching every fall for 29 years,” Stone said. “I’ve found every season challenging and fun. I’d like to thank both OhioState and University of Wyoming for the opportunity to pursue a passion.”
Gene Smith, director of athletics at The Ohio State University praised the career of Stone.
“Jim has been an ambassador for The Ohio State University and our volleyball program for more than a quarter century,” Smith said. “His record and list of accomplishments overshadow the positive effect he has had on hundreds of young people over the years. He will be missed.”
“I know I will miss coaching good players and I’ve been fortunate to be able to do that,” Stone said. “Watching players improve and achieve great things is a thrill for which I have no words to describe.”
With regards to his future plans, Stone is keeping his options open.
“I am not going to rule out coaching again, but right now I would like to step away to work on some volleyball-related projects that I’m excited about.”
MEYER NAMED THE OHIO STATE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Danielle Meyer has been named the Ohio State Athlete of the week after averaging 5.12 points per game on the weekend in the 3-2 loss to Northwestern and the 3-0 win over MichiganState. She averaged 4.38 kills, .25 aces, .88 blocks, 2.38 digs and handled all 45 reception attempts. Meyer scored a match-high 26.5 points against Northwestern and posted a match-high 23 kills, an ace serve, eight digs, a solo block, three block assists and handled 27 reception attempts without an error. Against MichiganState, Meyer had 14.5 points with 12 kills, an ace serve, 11 digs, three assist blocks and handled 18 reception attempts.
MEYER NOW FOURTH IN OSU CAREER POINTS
Danielle Meyer collected 41 points this past weekend and now has 1,798.5 in her career and has moved to fourth on the OSU career list. She has passed Leisa Wissler (1988-91) with 1,798.0. She recorded 26.5 points against Northwestern and 14.5 against MichiganState. Meyer needs 30 points to move past No. 3 Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 1,828.0
MEYER MOVES TO THIRD IN OSU CAREER KILLS
Danielle Meyer had 35 kills in the two matches last week and now has 1,491 career kills. She recorded 23 kills against Northwestern and 12 against MichiganState. Meyer has moved to third on the OSU career list passing Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 1,463. She stands 311 kills behind No. 2 Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 1,802.
MEYER ADVANCES TO FIFTH IN OSU CAREER TOTAL BLOCKS
With seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) last weekend, Danielle Meyer now has 392 career total blocks (47-345) and has moved to fifth on the OSU career list. She had a solo and three assist blocks against Northwestern and added three assist blocks against MichiganState. Meyer has moved out of a tie for sixth with Leisa Wissler [87-298] (1988-91) and Sherri Rinker [139-246] (1984-87) with 385 and passed Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 389 (67-322). Meyer needs 22 total blocks to move past No. 4 Dana Stearns (1997-00) with 413 (33-380) blocks.
DULL COLLECTS A CAREER-HIGH 16 KILLS AGAINST NORTHWESTERN
Katie Dull recorded a career-high 16 kills in the Northwestern match. Her previous best had been 14 against YoungstownState and Southern California. Dull added an ace serve, four digs and two assist blocks with 18 points in the contest. She had 12 kills against MichiganState, adding three digs and an assist block with 12.5 points in the contest. Dull has started every match and is averaging 3.49 points, 3.06 kills, .23 aces, 1.77 digs and .40 blocks per game.
HONE STARTS AGAINST NORTHWESTERN AND MICHIGANSTATE
Betsy Hone started at setter last week against Northwestern and MichiganState. She had 46 assists against the Wildcats and recorded career-highs of five kills and 12 digs in the contest. She added an ace serve and three assist blocks in the match. Against MichiganState, she had 47 assists, six digs and a kill. Hone has played in 10 matches with eight starts. She is averaging 11.03 assists, 1.97 digs and .72 blocks per game.
FOUR SOLO BLOCKS BY MCCARTHY MOVES HER TO 10TH IN OSU CAREER SOLO BLOCKS
Briana McCarthy recorded four solo blocks in the 3-0 victory over MichiganState to give her 49 for her career. The four blocks moves her to 10th on the OSU career solo blocks list. She passed Danielle Meyer with 47 and Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 45. McCarthy needs 15 solo blocks to move past Suzie Stiling (1999-02) and Sherri Helman (1993-96) who are tied for eighth with 63.
MCCARTHY COLLECTS A SEASON-HIGH 14 DIGS AGAINST THE WILDCATS
Briana McCarthy posted a season-high 14 digs against Northwestern last week. Her previous high was 11 against Southern California this season. McCarthy added nine kills and four assist blocks against the Wildcats. She posted 10 kills, two ace serves, nine digs, four solo blocks and four assist blocks against MichiganState. A starter in all 11 matches, McCarthy is averaging 4.35 points, 3.24 kills, .46 aces, 1.78 digs and 1.00 blocks per game
SZERSZEN RETURNS TO ACTION
Anna Szerszen returned to action last week in the matches against Northwestern and MichiganState. She had missed the previous four matches. Szerszen had nine kills, two ace serves, four digs, a solo block and three assists against Northwestern. She recorded a season-high 12 kills against MichiganState, adding an ace serve and four digs. Szerszen has played in seven matches with four starts. She is averaging 2.90 points, 2.30 kills, .35 aces, .75 digs and .45 blocks per game.
KASTEIN HAS A SEASON-HIGH 11 DIGS AGAINST NORTHWESTERN
Laura Kastein produced a season-high 11 digs against Northwestern in her start as a defensive specialist. She also contributed two assists against the Wildcats. She played in the MichiganState match recording six digs and an ace serve. Kastein has played in eight matches with two starts. She is averaging 1.14 digs per game and has three ace serves and three assists.
STEVENS RETURNS TO THE LIBERO POSITION AGAINST MICHIGANSTATE
Ami Stevens started at libero against MichiganState recording five digs and an assist in the match. She played in two games against Northwestern with no statistics. Stevens has played in all 11 matches this season with three starts and seven at libero. She leads the team with a 2.68 digs per game average.
DOZIER HAS SEVEN ASSIST BLOCKS AGAINST NORTHWESTERN
Kristen Dozier recorded a match-high seven assist blocks in the Northwestern match. She added two kills and a dig in the match. Against MichiganState, she had eight kills, a dig and two assist blocks against the Spartans. Dozier has played in all 11 matches with eight starts. She is averaging 2.19 points, 1.68 kills and .97 blocks per game.
CALHOUN STARTS A LIBERO AGAINST NORTHWESTERN
Kaila Calhoun recorded 12 kills in her start at libero against Northwestern. She added two assists against the Wildcats. Calhoun has played in all 11 matches this season with four starts and has started four matches at libero. She ranks second on the team in digs per game at 2.51.
MEYER A UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR THE 2007 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Middle blocker Danielle Meyer was one of three unanimous selections to the 2007 Preseason All-Big Ten team. Meyer is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. This is the second time she has earned preseason honors. PennState and Wisconsin each placed three players on the team while Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, OhioState and Purdue had one player each on the team.
Meyer, a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American, averaged 4.26 kills 1.96 digs and .85 blocks per game last season while hitting .301. She started all 32 matches in 2006, the first 22 at outside hitter and the last 10 at middle blocker.
OHIOSTATE PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
The Buckeyes, by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, OhioState were tabbed to finish fourth in the league. Four-time defending Big Ten champion PennState was picked to finish first with Wisconsin second and Minnesota third. Following OhioState, Purdue was ranked fifth, Michigan sixth, Michigan State seventh, Illinois eighth, Northwestern ninth, Iowa 10th and Indiana 11th.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone enters his 26th season at OhioState. He has a 525-282 record with the Buckeyes and is 291-163 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, OhioState has participated in the NCAA championship in 15 of the last 18 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 29-year career record is 575-324.
OHIO STATE WINS THE ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE
The Buckeyes won three matches last weekend at the Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU opened play with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) win over Southeast Missouri State Friday. BallState, with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) victory over Maine completed the first round. The Buckeyes started Saturday’s second round with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-19) win over Maine. SouthwestMissouriState defeated BallState, 3-2 (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) to complete the second round. SouthwestMissouriState started round three with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) win over Maine. The Buckeyes won the Challenge with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) victory over BallState. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with teammates Ami Stevens and Briana McCarthy selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Brenna Schlader and Molly Davis from SoutheastMissouriState, Lindsay Allman from Maine and Alyssa Rio from BallState.
MEYER AND DOZIER EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AT THE SPORTS IMPORTS CLASSIC
Danielle Meyer was named the Best Attacker and Kristen Dozier, the Best Blocker at the 2007 Sports Imports Classic. Other all-tournament members included USC’s Asia Kaczor as the Most Valuable Player and Taylor Carico as the Best Setter. Oregon’s Heather Meyers was named the Best Server and Katie Swoboda, the Best Libero. Southern California (2-0) won the Classic with a 3-2 win OhioState (0-2) and a 3-0 victory over Purdue (1-1). Oregon (1-1) lost to Purdue, 3-1 and defeated OhioState, 3-0.
