Overall
| • | With 36 varsity sports, Ohio State is the largest fully funded athletics program in the country and is a totally self-supporting auxiliary unit of the University. |
| • | During the 2010-11 fiscal year, the Department of Athletics will pay nearly $30 million of its $128 budget to the University for funding support toward the University’s academic mission, including nearly $15 in grant-in-aid reimbursement. |
| • | U.S. News and World Report ranks Ohio State as one of the Top 20 public universities. |
The People.
| • | In 2010, Gene Smith, assistant VP and director of athletics at Ohio State, was the recipient of the Sports Business Journal Athletics Director of the Year. He also will serve as the 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Chair. |
| • | Following the 2009 football season, the Ohio State Department of Athletics received an AT&T National Sportsmanship award from the National Association of Directors of Athletics for its Armed Forces tribute in its home opener vs. Navy Sept. 5. |
| • | Each year, Ohio State student-athletes, coaches and staff members are involved in thousands of hours of community service. |
| • | In 2009-10, the Department of Athletics will transfer its fourth $1 million contribution payment to the University toward its $9 million commitment to fund the Thompson Memorial Library renovation, which reopened Aug. 3, 2009. |
The Tradition.
| • | All-time, Ohio State teams have combined for 62 national titles. |
| • | Ohio State has won national championships in baseball, men’s basketball, fencing, football, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, pistol, men’s track, men’s swimming and synchronized swimming. |
| • | All-time, there are more than 2,000 Buckeye All-Americans, including 85 in 2009-10. |
| • | Buckeyes have won a total of 327 individual national championships with five coming in 2008-09. |
The Excellence.
| • | The overall grade point average of the more than 1,000 Ohio State student-athletes is 3.04 with a total of 503 at 3.0 or higher. |
| • | The Buckeyes topped the Big Ten for the seventh-consecutive year with a record 346 Academic All-Big Ten selections. Ohio State also led the conference with 67 Distinguished Scholars with GPAs of 3.7 or higher. |
| • | In 2008-09, 28 teams represented Ohio State in postseason play and combined for eight conference championships. |
| • | All-time, Ohio State has won 294 combined conference championships, with 195 Big Ten titles. |
