Peppe Aquatic Center
In January 1977, the Ohio State swimming and diving team moved into the new $4 million Mike Peppe Aquatic Center, an addition and renovation for the existing structure of Larkins Hall.
The complex is named for the great Ohio State swimming and diving coach whose career spanned four decades (1931-63). Peppe’s 11 NCAA titles still are unmatched in the aquatic sports.
The Mike Peppe Aquatic Center houses an eight-lane, 50-meter pool, two 25-yard pools (a five-lane class pool and the six-lane varsity competition pool), and a 45' by 45' diving well, judged to be one of the outstanding diving competition facilities in the nation. The facility has $37,000 worth of electronic swimming and diving judging equipment with complete scoreboards which are easily visible from the over 1,700 seats.
The diving well in the Peppe Aquatic Center is one of the most modern and fully equipped in the United States. It features two one-meter springboards, two three-meter springboards and a platform at both the five and 10-meter levels. The diving well is 17 feet deep at all points. Also featured in the diving well is the pro lew bubble machine which forces compressed air up from the bottom of the pool. This creates a foam cushion which reduces the chance of injury and makes tower diving earier and safer. In addition, Ohio State has an electronic scoring system for the judging and scoring of diving. The unit immediately displays judges’ scores and the diver’s total, providing spectators with the opportunity to know how each diver is performing after each dive.
Additionally, the Ohio State team has access to several conditioning rooms where Nautilus equipment, Univeral gyms, Iso-Kinetic machines and pulleys can be used to fit the individual’s own strength and/or endurance needs. Locker rooms and equipment rooms are nearby and easily accessible for practice and competition sessions.
