Four Buckeyes Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Teams – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Ohio State student-athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. Two divers, Kellen Harkness and Wes Wieser, were men’s at-large selections. Rower Justine Mahler and ice hockey goaltender Erika Vanderveer were women’s at-large honorees. Harkness was named to the first team, while Mahler, Vanderveer and Wieser were named to the second team.
Harkness is a senior operations management major from Wuyllap, Wash. In the 2006-07 season, he was a two-time All-American in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and was Big Ten champion in the 3-meter as well as conference diver of the year. Harkness is a 2006 CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America selection, a CSCAA Academic All-American, two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
Mahler, from Cincinnati, Ohio, is a senior majoring in material science and engineering. She rowed with the nationally-ranked first varsity eight boat that finished the 2007 regular season with a 7-1 record. Mahler, the team’s co-captain and Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner, is a CRCA National Scholar Athlete, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
Vanderveer is a sociology major with a minor in design from Bradford, Ontario. As a senior, she set Ohio State season records for wins (18), saves (780), goals-against-average (2.19) and save percentage (.920) and holds several Buckeye career goaltending records as well. Vanderveer is a three-time AWHCA Scholar All-American, two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete, three-time WCHA All-Academic Team honoree, two-time Academic All-Big Ten at-large selection and four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
Wieser, a native of Chesterfield, Mo., is computer sciences and engineering major. He was the 2007 Big Ten Champion on the 10-meter and finished ninth in platform at the NCAA championships after recording seven Top 3 finishes in the season. Wieser, a sophomore, is a two-time All-American as well as two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
To qualify for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be at least in their sophomore year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Nominees are voted by members of the CoSIDA organization with eight districts totaling 10 student-athletes on both the first and second teams.
