COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State football team held its player draft Wednesday to select teams for the 2007 Spring Game at 1:05 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium. Lawrence Wilson, a junior defensive end, was taken as the No. 1 overall pick by the Gray in a position-by-position draft moderated by head coach Jim Tressel.
After the defensive end position was exhausted, the Scarlet selected junior offensive tackle Alex Boone. The draft continued with position selections, alternating between the offensive and defensive units. The draft concluded with special teams selections.
Dionte Johnson, a senior fullback, spoke for the Scarlet after the draft.
“We feel real confident in our picks,” a smiling Johnson said. “We are a team that can’t be matched. We believe we have a great coaching staff from the basketball players (honorary coaches) to our real coaches. We feel we can get it done.”
Brandon Smith, a junior tight end, provided the Gray’s rebuttal.
“We also are pretty confident,” Smith said. “We have great guys on this team that will do great things Saturday. It will be quite a battle.”
Junior quarterback Todd Boeckman was assigned to play for the Scarlet team. Fellow QB sophomore Rob Schoenhoft will split time between both squads, playing the first half with the Scarlet and switching to Gray for the final two quarters. Freshman Antonio Henton will quarterback the Gray in the first half and move to the Scarlet for the rest of the game.
Members of the 2007 Ohio State men’s basketball team will serve as honorary coaches Saturday. The Buckeyes won their second-consecutive outright Big Ten title this season and advanced to the national championship game. Jamar Butler, a junior guard, and Mike Conley Jr., a freshman point guard, have been deemed honorary head coaches. Butler will coach the Gray and Conley will man the sidelines for the Scarlet team. From the football staff, Jim Heacock will serve as head coach of the Gray while Joe Daniels will lead the Scarlet.
Tickets for the Scarlet and Gray Game in Ohio Stadium currently are on sale at the Athletics Ticket Office in the Jerome Schottenstein Center and at all McDonald’s locations in Columbus and Central Ohio at $5.00 each.
The Department of Athletics will donate $1.00 from each ticket sold to the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) and McDonald’s will donate the same amount from each ticket sold at their restaurants to the Ronald McDonald House.
Tickets also will be available Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. in the North Rotunda of Ohio Stadium, as well as gates 4 and 7 and in the southeast ticket lobby of St. John Arena. All ticket sales will be on a cash only basis on Saturday.
