Ohio State’s Tessa Bonhomme, Team Canada Win Gold at IIHF World Women’s Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme of the Ohio State women’s hockey team concluded the IIHF World Women’s Championship with a gold medal after Team Canada defeated the United States in the championship game by a score of 5-1 Tuesday at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is the ninth all-time IIHF World Women’s Championship for Canada.
Bonhomme, a native of Sudbury, Ontario, scored a goal and an assist in the competition, with both points coming in the playoff game Monday against Finland. She scored her goal at 12:44 of the first period and added an assist at 9:45 of the second in Team Canada’s 5-0 victory against the Finns.
Team Canada also defeated the U.S. in a playoff game, winning 5-4 after a shootout. In preliminary games, the Canadians shut out Germany, 8-0, and Switzerland, 9-0. The event was held April 3-10 in Selkirk and Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Bonhomme is a three-time member of the Canadian Under-22 team and also has played in two Four Nations Cups, most recently helping Team Canada win the event in November 2006.
This season, Bonhomme was an RBK/AHCA Second Team All-American, Third Team All-USCHO and First Team All-WCHA honoree. A co-captain of the Buckeyes, she was a Top 10 finalist for the 2007 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and concluded the season with 1.09 points per game to rank fourth in the NCAA in defenseman scoring.
Also competing in the tournament was former Buckeye All-American Emma Laaksonen (2001-04), who played as a member of the Finnish National Team. She helped lead the team to the bronze medal game, where Finland fell to Sweden by a score of 1-0. Laaksonen was named player of the game in the Finns’ 5-0 loss to Canada in the playoffs.
