COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey goaltender Erika Vanderveer participated in the NCAA Skills Challenge Saturday as part of the 2007 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo. Vanderveer was one of four female goaltenders selected to participate in the event that combines senior men’s and women’s student-athletes from various college hockey leagues and splits them into teams in an East vs. West format.
Vanderveer, who completed her career as Ohio State’s all-time wins, goal-against-average and save percentage leader, took part in the rapid fire and penalty shot competition. She faced Sheila Zingler (Yale) of the East Team, saving four of eight shots. In the penalty shot competition at the conclusion of the event, Vanderveer ended on a stellar note, stopping all three shots faced, including a kick save on a shot by Crystal Connors of Yale. The West Team won the 2007 Skills Competition by a score of 13-10.
As part of the Frozen Four weekend, Vanderveer and the other student-athletes also helped instruct at a hockey clinic for elementary school children Saturday morning in St. Louis. They participated in fan fest activities that afternoon, meeting fans and signing autographs.
Vanderveer was the third Ohio State representative to take part in the two years of the Skills Competition. Former Buckeyes Jana Harrigan and Dave Caruso participated in the inaugural event in 2006.
