COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Jessica Davenport was selected Wednesday to her third-consecutive Associated Press All-America team. She was named first team in a vote by 50 members of the national media panel, who also vote in the weekly AP poll.
With her honor Wednesday, Davenport became Ohio State’s first three-time All-American in 42 seasons of women’s basketball. The product of Columbus Independence High School was deemed a first-team All-American by the AP in 2005 and was a second-team honoree in 2006. She joins Katie Smith as Ohio State’s only AP All-Americans. Smith earned second-team AP status in 1996. Tracey Hall was a Kodak All-American in 1986-87. Smith garnered Kodak laurels in 1993.
Davenport was joined on the AP first team by Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris, Tennessee’s Candace Parker, Duke’s Lindsay Harding and North Carolina’s Ivory Latta.
Davenport, who graduated March 19 with a degree in Family Resource Management/ Consumer Affairs, won her third Big Ten player of the year award in as many seasons in 2007. She led the Buckeyes to a 28-4 overall mark and a 15-1 Big Ten record en route to the Buckeyes’ third-consecutive league crown. She led the Big Ten in scoring at 20 points per game and ranked second in the league in rebounds per contest (9.6) and field goal percentage (.597/ 222-372). In addition, Davenport averaged 2.8 blocked shots per game, which rated third in the Big Ten.
The only player in Big Ten history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career, Davenport posted a career total of 384 blocks and ended her Buckeye run as the Big Ten’s all-time leader. Her total ranks seventh in NCAA annals.
Davenport finished with 2,303 career points, which rates fifth all-time in Big Ten history and second behind Smith (1993-96), who is Ohio State’s all-time points leader with 2,578. Davenport tied Courtney Coleman (2000-03) for the top Ohio State career field goal percentage at .604 (875/1448) and is the all-time leader at Ohio State with 875 made FG. Davenport’s career rebound total of 1,093 rates second in OSU history. Davenport awaits a possible selection in the 2007 WNBA Draft April 4 in Cleveland, Ohio.
