Lance Palmer and J.D. Bergman were the highest finishers for the Scarlet and Gray, placing fourth at 149 and 197 pounds, respectively. Mike Pucillo was sixth at 184 pounds and J Jaggers was seventh at 141 pounds.
Palmer (Fr., Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) lost a tight 1-0 decision to No. 1-seed Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota in the third-place match-up. There was no scoring throughout the bout and Schlatter won on two minutes of riding time. En route to the third-place match-up, Palmer defeated Tyler Turner of Wisconsin, 6-5. In a contest that went into a tiebreaker, Palmer was able to record a reversal 14 seconds into the extra session for a 6-4 lead. Turner attempted the rally, scoring an escape, but came up short.
For the second-consecutive meeting, sixth-seed Bergman (Jr., Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor) topped No. 4-seed Phil Davis in the consolation semifinals. Bergman scored a reversal at the 1:02 mark in the third period to come from behind a 3-2 deficit against Davis, a two-time NCAA finalist. A technical violation then was called on Davis and Bergman quickly took a 5-3 lead. Davis scored an escape with 35 seconds left, but it was not enough. In his second-career NCAA third-place bout, Bergman lost to No. 11-seed Chris Weidman of Hofstra, 9-4. The match was close from the beginning, as both wrestlers were knotted up at 3-3 at the end of the first period. Weidman put up the lone point of the second session with his escape with 32 seconds left on the clock. Down by a point going into the third, Bergman notched an escape of his own at 1:38 to even the score again (4-4). However, a takedown by Weidman at 1:01, as well as a three-point nearfall with three seconds left secured the win for Weidman. In the consolation semifinals, No. 3-seed Pucillo (Fr., Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) attempted the third-period rally against No. 2-seed Roger Kish of Minnesota. Down 5-2 in the third period, Pucillo evened the score at 5-all after Kish was called for his second warning and Pucillo followed with a takedown with 20 seconds left on the clock. But with just three seconds left, Kish scored a takedown for the 7-5 win. In the fifth-place match-up, Michigan’s and fourth-seed Tyrel Todd pinned Pucillo in 4:34.
Jaggers (Fr., Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) won the seventh-place match-up against Max Meltzer of Harvard, 7-1. Down 1-0 early in the second period, Jaggers answered with an escape of his own at the 1:22 mark in the third. He continued tacking on points, recording a takedown with 28 seconds left for the 3-1 lead. Scoring a three-point nearfall as time expired, coupled with a riding time of 1:06 solidified the win for Jaggers. It was the second meeting between the two wrestlers at the championships. In round one, Jaggers defeated Meltzer, 11-5.
