Athletes of the Week
Seth Berglee, in his first competition with the Buckeyes, won three events at the pistol team’s Ohio Cup and set two school records. He won the open free pistol competition with a 527 score. He had a 568 score in open air pistol, setting the Ohio State record. In the open three-gun aggregate, Berglee scored a 1,631 to establish a school record.
After collecting two shutout victories and 12 saves last week, senior goalkeeper Casey Latchem has been named the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Latchem, an OSU tri-captain from Perrysburg, Ohio, had five saves in a 1-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield Wednesday and a season-high seven saves in a 1-0 win over Penn State Saturday.
Latchem has six shutouts and a 0.98 goals-against average in 12 games this season for the 7-3-2 Buckeyes and owns 18 career shutouts, which rank third in Ohio State history and is one shy of second place.
Athletics Good Stuff
In the football team’s 23-7 win over Purdue, freshman Chimdi Chekwa set a career high with 10 tackles, all solo stops, and added a pass breakup to lead a dominating defensive effort by the Buckeyes. Ohio State entered the game leading the Big Ten and ranked among the top five in the country in scoring, rushing and total defense. The Boilermakers boasted the conference’s top offensive attack with 45.4 points (8th nationally) and 495.8 yards (T10th nationally) per outing, but were limited to only 272 total yards, four rushing yards and a single touchdown. Chekwa collects his first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week laurel of his career and the first for a freshman Buckeye defensive player since linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer was honored on Oct. 22, 1996. In addition, place kicker Ryan Pretorius was named a Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week selection after going 3-3 with field goals of 44, 39 and 23 yards.
The men’s basketball team opens practice Friday in Columbus. The men’s team advanced to the NCAA national championship game in 2007 after winning the 2007 Big Ten Tournament in Chicago and earning the program’s second-consecutive Big Ten regular season title. Fans will have a chance to get an early preview of the 2007-08 team from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 20 at Value City Arena. The public scrimmage will be held prior to Ohio State’s homecoming football game at 3:30 p.m. (ABC) vs. Michigan State.
The women’s basketball television schedule was announced Wednesday. The Buckeyes will appear on national television at least 12 times this season. The Big Ten Network will carry up to nine of those contests. The team starts official practice Saturday.
The men’s soccer team went 2-0 last week with 1-0 home wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Penn State. Senior goalkeeper Casey Latchem had 12 saves and upped his shutout total to six this season and 18 in his career. The Buckeyes now are 7-3-2 and host Oakland at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday before getting back on the road for a match at Wisconsin Saturday night.
The women’s soccer team went 0-2 on the road, falling to conference rivals Northwestern, 2-0, Oct. 5 and Wisconsin, 1-0, Oct. 7 to drop to 7-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes return home to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this weekend to face Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Michigan State at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Big Ten Network will be in Columbus Sunday to televise the game vs. the Spartans.
Women’s volleyball fell to 11th-ranked Minnesota in five games Oct. 5 and defeated Iowa in four Oct. 6. Danielle Meyer combined for 55 points in the two matches. She had 24 points against Minnesota with 18 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and six assists. Meyer recorded 31 points against Iowa with 27 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and four assists. Briana McCarthy started at setter in both matches collecting 46 assists against Minnesota and 61 against Iowa.
Libero Ami Stevens was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play last week against Minnesota and Iowa. Stevens posted a season-high 25 digs in the 3-2 loss to 11th-ranked Minnesota. She added two ace serves and two assists in the match and handled 38 reception attempts without an error. Against Iowa, in a 3-1 victory, Stevens recorded a match-high 19 digs against the Hawkeyes adding an ace serve and an assist. She handled 30 of 32 reception attempts in the match against the Hawkeyes. For the season, Stevens leads Ohio State in digs per game with a 3.04 average.
Ohio State plays at third-ranked Penn State Wednesday at 8 p.m. in a match that will be carried live by the Big Ten Network and returns home to host Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m.
The men’s hockey team opens the regular season co-hosting the Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational Friday-Saturday at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Friday, the Buckeyes will take on Mercyhurst at 8:05 p.m., preceded by a matchup between Wisconsin and Notre Dame at 4:35 p.m. Consolation and championship games will be played at 4:35 and 7:35 p.m., respectively, Saturday.
The women’s tennis team competed in the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational over the weekend in Blacksburg, Va. Junior Angela DiPastina won the Flight B singles title, while junior Julie Blackmore beat freshman teammate Cami Hubbs for the Flight C crown. The Buckeyes return to action Oct. 18-23 in the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The field hockey team (5-8, 1-2 Big Ten) fell to No. 7 Michigan State by a score of 4-2 Oct. 7 in East Lansing, Mich. It was the first Big Ten road game for Ohio State. Michigan State built a quick 2-0 lead scoring twice in the opening six minutes of the game. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by freshman Jena Cacciatore. The Spartans regained their two-goal lead minutes later, but Ohio State responded at 34:49 when senior Yesenia Luces fed the ball up to junior Linda Haussener who scored from mid-circle to trail 3-2 at halftime. The Spartans scored 11 seconds into the second half for a 4-2 lead, where the score would remain for the final. Ali Ristas made two saves with three goals allowed in the first Big Ten start of her career. Lindsay Quintiliani entered the game for the second half and made five saves.
Ohio State will next return to Columbus to play in its final two home games of the regular season. The Buckeyes host No. 17 Louisville Wednesday at 3 p.m. in their final nonconference game. OSU then welcomes No. 5 Iowa to North Turf Field Sunday at 1 p.m. The game against the Hawkeyes will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and is senior day for the Buckeyes.
The women’s hockey team opened its 2007-08 season splitting a nonconference series at Connecticut. The Buckeyes defeated UConn 3-2 Oct. 5 with sophomore Michele Tonnessen scoring the game-winner. OSU dropped game two Oct. 6 by a score of 5-2. It was the first time Ohio State lost to Connecticut in six meetings. Senior captain Tessa Bonhomme led the Buckeyes in scoring the first weekend with four points. The defenseman recorded a goal and assist in both games. Just behind her is fellow senior Erin Keys who scored twice and added an assist for three points. Senior Mallory Peckels also picked up multiple points with two assists in the first game.
The Buckeyes begin league play this weekend when they travel to Madison to take on the two-time defending NCAA champion Wisconsin Badgers. Games begin at 2:07 p.m. (CT) Saturday and 1:07 p.m. Sunday.
The men’s cross country team rested its Top 5 runners Oct. 5 at the All-Ohio Championships and still posted the third-best Division I team score. Freshman Andy Arnio led the way with a seventh-place finish overall as Taylor Candella followed in eighth place.
The women’s cross country team competed Oct. 5 at the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, Ohio. Ellen Birmingham led the way for the Buckeyes for the fourth-consecutive meet, finishing 13th overall.
The men’s golf team concluded the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic Monday in a tie for fourth place with a team score of 6-under 858 after a third round of 292. The Buckeyes tied with Virginia Tech. The tournament was held at the par 72, 7,063-yard Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Sophomore Patrick Simard was Ohio State’s top finisher in a tie for fourth with a total of 209 (-7). In his first tournament of the fall, he carded 66-72-71 to tie with Duke’s Michael Schachner at 209.
Senior Kyle Coconis recorded his second Top 20 finish of the fall with a tie for 15th, also concluding the event under par with a total of 214 (-2). Freshman Bo Hoag tied for 25th with a total of 218; he shot 72-71-75 at the event to finish 2-over. Senior Zach Sebert opened the second day tied for 50th and shot a final round of 72 to finish tied for 38th at 4-over 220. Junior Dan Rush placed 73rd with a total of 228.
The Buckeyes next travel to Wilmington, N.C., to compete in the Landfall Tradition hosted by UNC-Wilmington Oct. 26-28.
Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational Sept. 22-23, the women’s golf team looks to continue its success in fall play as it heads to the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., Fri.-Sun.
The pistol team won six of seven individual titles at The Ohio Cup last week. Buckeye Seth Berglee won the open free and air pistol events and the three-gun aggregate title. Berglee set the all time OSU record in air pistol with a 568 mark and established a new school record in the three-gun aggregate of 1,631. OSU’s Teresa Meyer won the women’s sport and air events and the women’s two-gun aggregate event. The pistol team will next compete at Missouri State, Oct. 12-13.
The rifle team lost, 4,649 to 4,506 to Kentucky Sunday in Converse Hall. James Clark was OSU’s top shooter in both smallbore rifle (564) and air rifle (583). Buckeye Steven Nozaki fired a 561 in smallbore with Jasmine Magaria shooting a 554. In air rifle, Staci Collins posted a 573 with Nozaki recording a 567. The rifle team will host West Virginia Oct. 14.
The softball team went 4-0 at the Seventh Annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic last weekend at Fred Beekman Park in the event that is one of the largest in Central Ohio benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Chris Spielman, Stefanie’s husband and former All-American linebacker for the Buckeyes, spoke to all the teams and fans Sunday and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Ohio State went 8-1 during its fall season and will spend the rest of the fall and early winter months prepping for the 2008 season, which begins Feb. 8 in Florida.
Baseball’s Scarlet team defeated the Gray team, 3-2, to claim Game 1 in the best-of-five Scarlet and Gray World Series Monday at Bill Davis Stadium. Game 2 is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday while Game 3 scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start Wednesday. If required, the Buckeyes will play at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday until a series champion is crowned.
